Job Overview: The Geospatial scientist" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Data Scientist position is integral to the Data Lab Unit at WRI Indonesia, which aims to establish a leading hub for open-source data, code, and visualizations. This role focuses on delivering geospatial analytics, processing remotely sensed data, and providing spatial modeling and intelligence that align with the strategic priorities of the organization. The Geospatial Data Scientist will contribute to the development and maintenance of flagship platforms, support programmatic initiatives across teams, and design pipelines for analysis-ready spatial data. The position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality data standards and proper documentation, as well as the creation of spatial dashboards and analytics products. The role emphasizes the importance of integrating equity into the workplace and organizational culture, reflecting WRI's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Geospatial Data Scientist will engage in a variety of tasks, primarily focusing on research (80%) and project management (20%). Key responsibilities include conducting geospatial analysis and spatial intelligence research to support evidence-based decision-making, contributing to GeoAI-related research projects, designing and implementing geospatial models and algorithms for predictive analytics, and collaborating with the team to expand the GeoAI Lab. The role also involves exploring new geospatial technologies, maintaining a centralized repository for geospatial datasets, and ensuring data quality and compliance with open data principles. Additionally, the Geospatial Data Scientist will document methodologies for transparency, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and integrate geospatial insights into program strategies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science, or related fields. A minimum of three years of professional experience in geospatial data analysis, remote sensing, or spatial data science is required. Applicants should demonstrate a proven track record in managing and analyzing large geospatial datasets and remotely sensed imagery, as well as strong proficiency in GIS software and cloud-based geospatial platforms. Familiarity with geospatial programming libraries in Python or R, experience with satellite imagery preprocessing, and knowledge of machine learning techniques for geospatial applications are also essential. Strong writing skills, organizational abilities, and time management skills are necessary for success in this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Geospatial Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science, or similar disciplines. A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred, as it may enhance the candidate's qualifications and understanding of advanced geospatial concepts and technologies.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of professional experience in geospatial data analysis, remote sensing, or spatial data science. Candidates should have a solid background in managing, processing, and analyzing large geospatial datasets, as well as hands-on experience with satellite imagery and geospatial programming. Familiarity with machine learning techniques and cloud computing environments is also beneficial.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, as the role involves technical writing and collaboration with international teams. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly Bahasa Indonesia, is advantageous and may enhance communication within the local context.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is from 15 September 2025 to 31 December 2025, with the possibility of extension based on performance, project needs, and budget availability. The role is part-time and limited term, with a daily rate-based consultant arrangement allowing for a maximum of 18 working days per month. Candidates must have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position. Final candidates may be required to take a writing test and provide writing samples as part of the selection process.
