In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Communications Analyst position at UN Women involves assisting in the planning and implementation of communications and advocacy strategies to enhance the organization's visibility and awareness among partners, media, and the public. The role requires close collaboration with various teams within UN Women and external stakeholders, including government officials, media, and civil society organizations. The Communications Analyst will provide substantive support in designing outreach strategies, developing advocacy materials, coordinating media relations, and managing the organization's online presence. The position also entails facilitating knowledge sharing and conducting training on communication and advocacy, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into all communications efforts. The incumbent will play a crucial role in promoting UN Women’s initiatives and campaigns, contributing to the overall mission of advancing gender equality and women's empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide substantive support to the planning and design of external communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans, ensuring a gender perspective is integrated.
  • Monitor and analyze print and social media, providing insights to the Country Office, Regional Office, and Headquarters.
  • Coordinate the development and dissemination of advocacy materials, including drafting press releases and briefing materials.
  • Manage media relations by establishing and maintaining relationships with relevant media outlets, responding to inquiries, and organizing press events.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with donors and civil society organizations to enhance visibility and outreach.
  • Oversee the Country Office's web and online presence, ensuring content is updated and aligned with corporate requirements.
  • Facilitate knowledge building by identifying best practices and organizing training sessions on communication and advocacy.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Communications Analyst position should possess strong communication, networking, and advocacy skills. They should have a solid understanding of web-based management systems, social media platforms, and the local media landscape. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively across diverse constituencies and have a strategic and analytical mindset. Knowledge of gender and human rights issues is desirable, as is experience in production, graphic design, and photography standards. The candidate should also be proficient in using office software packages and web-based management systems.

Educational Background:
A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a relevant field is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
Candidates should have 0-2 years of professional work experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy. Additionally, at least 3 years of experience in social media usage is required. Experience in writing and editing in English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian is essential, including the ability to produce articles, reports, and press releases. Proficiency in using computers and office software packages, as well as experience with web-based management systems, is also required. Familiarity with gender issues is considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, along with fluency in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. These language skills are crucial for effective communication and advocacy efforts within the role.
