Job Overview:
The Community Forest Monitoring Specialist position is designed to enhance the capacity of local communities in Suriname to monitor and manage their forest resources effectively. The specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing community-based monitoring systems that align with national policies and international standards. This role requires a deep understanding of forest ecology, community engagement, and data analysis. The specialist will work closely with local stakeholders, including indigenous communities, to ensure that their knowledge and practices are integrated into monitoring efforts. The position also involves training community members in data collection and analysis, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility towards forest conservation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement community forest monitoring frameworks that are culturally appropriate and scientifically sound.
  • Collaborate with local communities to identify key indicators for forest health and biodiversity.
  • Train community members in data collection techniques, ensuring they are equipped to monitor their forest resources effectively.
  • Analyze data collected by communities and provide feedback to improve monitoring practices.
  • Facilitate workshops and meetings to discuss findings and adapt monitoring strategies as necessary.
  • Prepare reports on community monitoring activities and present findings to stakeholders, including government agencies and NGOs.
  • Ensure that monitoring activities align with national and international forest management standards.
  • Support the integration of traditional ecological knowledge into monitoring practices.
  • Engage with local and national authorities to advocate for community rights and sustainable forest management practices.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in community engagement and participatory approaches to forest management.
  • Strong knowledge of forest ecology, biodiversity, and conservation practices.
  • Experience in data collection and analysis, particularly in a community context.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in an accessible manner.
  • Familiarity with national and international forest policies and frameworks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including indigenous communities, government officials, and NGOs.
  • Proficiency in project management and report writing.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field is required. A Master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset.

Experience:
At least 5 years of professional experience in community-based natural resource management, with a focus on forest monitoring and conservation. Experience working in Suriname or similar ecological and cultural contexts is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in Dutch and English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Suriname is an advantage and will enhance communication with community members.

Additional Notes:
This position is for a fixed term of 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The role is full-time and requires the specialist to be based in Suriname, with travel to various communities as needed. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with UNDP standards. The position is open to both national and international candidates.
