Job Overview:
The Principal Investment Officer position within IFC's Corporate Finance Services (CFS) is a senior role that requires a strong background in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the execution of CFS's global business strategy, working closely with regional teams to facilitate business development and execute transactions. This role involves leading the Asset Monetization Program (AMP) and collaborating with regional leads to drive the origination and execution of advisory mandates across various regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and Central Asia (MCT). The Principal Investment Officer will also be involved in pre-IPO advisory, helping clients navigate the complexities of listing processes and corporate governance. The position is based in Washington, D.C., and reports to the Global Manager of CFS, making it a pivotal role in mobilizing private capital for the World Bank Group.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Investment Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Strategy Development: Collaborating with regional teams and the World Bank to design and execute CFS's strategy, focusing on high-impact projects and strategic priorities.
  • AMP Leadership: Acting as the global anchor for the Asset Monetization Program, supporting regional teams in the origination, design, and execution of AMP projects.
  • M&A Advisory: Driving the origination and execution of buy-side and sell-side advisory mandates, as well as restructuring advisory and EMP services across multiple regions.
  • Pre-IPO Advisory: Leading strategic pre-IPO advisory mandates, including advising clients on listing processes, corporate structure, and governance.
  • Relationship Management: Building and maintaining strong relationships with internal counterparts and clients to identify collaboration opportunities that align with IFC's objectives.
  • Client Management: Assisting clients in developing transaction strategies, conducting bankability assessments, and financial modeling.
  • Documentation: Overseeing the drafting of key transaction reports and project documentation, including marketing documents and transaction agreements.
  • Mentorship: Providing guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues to help them achieve business targets.
  • Corporate Initiative: Supporting IFC's brand in the CFS space and contributing to knowledge management by disseminating CFS's expertise globally.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance, business, law, or consulting, along with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience. A combination of experience in equity capital markets transactions, particularly in taking companies public on major international stock exchanges, is preferred. Significant transaction advisory experience in buy-side, sell-side, and restructuring mandates is essential, especially in the disruptive technology sector. A proven track record of delivering results under pressure, developing strong client relationships, and executing cross-border mandates is required. Candidates should demonstrate strong business judgment, professional credibility, and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or an equivalent professional qualification in finance, business, law, or consulting. This advanced education is crucial for understanding the complexities of corporate finance and investment strategies, as well as for navigating the regulatory environments associated with international transactions.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least 12 years of relevant experience in the finance sector, with a strong emphasis on equity capital markets transactions. Experience as a principal investor, advisor, or underwriter, particularly in the context of public offerings on major stock exchanges, is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have substantial experience in transaction advisory roles, particularly in M&A and restructuring, and should be adept at managing complex projects in challenging environments.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, which is essential for communication within the organization and with clients. While not required, proficiency in additional languages would be considered an asset, particularly if it enhances the ability to engage with clients in various regions.
