Job Overview: The internship is offered with the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). This branch serves as the advisory and research arm of SCAD, focusing on the practices and procedures of the Security Council. Interns will engage in research related to political issues, assist in documentation and cataloguing, and contribute to the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council. The internship is flexible, allowing for remote work or a hybrid arrangement at the UN premises in New York. Interns will gain valuable experience in international relations and the workings of the UN, while also contributing to significant research and outreach efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will conduct research on political issues relevant to the Security Council's agenda, assist with documentation and information cataloguing, and draft studies for the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council. They will also help with outreach efforts, including preparing social media content, and contribute to the development of computerized databases that capture the contemporary practices of the Security Council. Additional responsibilities may include performing other duties as required by the Chief of the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must also demonstrate the ability to conduct research and draft reports, as well as proficiency in standard office software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Educational Background: Candidates should be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application, and an official certificate will be required later in the process.
Experience: No prior professional work experience is required for this internship, but candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. The ability to conduct research and draft reports is essential, and familiarity with social media content production is advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid and can be either full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week). The duration of the internship is six months, and candidates are encouraged to indicate their preferred start date in their Motivational Statement. The UN is committed to gender balance and encourages female candidates to apply. Applicants who have previously served six months as an intern in the UN Common Systems are not eligible. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The UN does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
