Job Overview:
The intern position in the Communications Team at the WFP Brussels Office is designed for individuals who are passionate about humanitarian work and communications. The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the communications efforts of WFP, particularly in relation to the European Union (EU). The main objective of the Brussels Office is to mobilize funds from the EU by establishing partnerships with various EU institutions and providing technical support to WFP country offices. The intern will assist in updating and maintaining visibility documents, help run paid ad campaigns, create content for social media, and support the organization of events and initiatives. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in communications within a leading humanitarian organization, while also contributing to the important work of WFP in addressing global security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the communications team, including:
  • Updating, maintaining, and expanding the communications team’s visibility overview documents in Salesforce and Excel, ensuring accurate tracking of visibility requirements for contracts with the EU.
  • Assisting the communications team in following up with WFP country offices regarding upcoming and outstanding visibility requirements.
  • Supporting the execution of paid ad campaigns related to EU contracts, which may involve copywriting for ads, assisting in campaign setup, monitoring, reporting, and content creation.
  • Creating engaging content for the @WFP_Europe Twitter account using tools like Canva and Wochit, as well as producing content for Brussels-based initiatives, such as videos featuring EU officials and promotional materials for events.
  • Helping to prepare and run events, exhibits, panels, and other in-person initiatives in Brussels, collaborating closely with the Stakeholder Relations & Policy Development team and EU counterparts.
  • Maintaining an updated list of Brussels/EU-related media contacts and identifying opportunities to enhance coverage of WFP priorities in the media.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong writing and editing skills, as well as strong analytical and drafting abilities. A solid understanding of EU affairs is also essential. The intern should be proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of working collaboratively within a team. Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation tools will be beneficial for this role. Additionally, the intern should demonstrate a commitment to WFP's values and mission, showcasing a passion for humanitarian work and effective communication.

Educational Background:
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in fields such as Political Science, International Development, Economics, Journalism, International Relations, Communications, or other relevant areas. Candidates should have completed at least two years of their program and attended classes within the past 12 months. Alternatively, candidates may be enrolled in a graduate program or have recently graduated (within six months prior to applying) while also having attended classes in the past year.

Experience:
This position is aimed at junior-level candidates, meaning that prior professional experience is not a strict requirement. However, any relevant internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to communications, humanitarian work, or EU affairs will be considered advantageous. The focus is on candidates who are eager to learn and contribute to the WFP's mission.

Languages:
Fluency in English (level C) is mandatory for this position. Additionally, intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official EU language is considered an asset, as it will enhance the intern's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to communications efforts effectively.

The internship is expected to last for up to 8 months, with a tentative start date in mid-August 202
  • Interns will receive a monthly stipend of up to US$1000, depending on the duty station. However, WFP does not cover living expenses, accommodation arrangements, or visa costs. Travel tickets may be reimbursed for candidates from developing countries studying in their home country.
