Job Overview: The Communication Officer position is situated within the communication and fundraising department of Handicap International Belgium, which consists of 11 members. The primary responsibility of this role is to inform the Belgian public, institutions, media, and donors about the work of Handicap International and the values it upholds. The Communication Officer will collaborate closely with colleagues in the communication and fundraising department, including the digital officer and press officer, as well as with the communication services of the federation and other national associations. This role is crucial for ensuring coherence in all external communications and involves producing content for various communication channels. The Communication Officer will work alongside the French-speaking Communication Officer and the Digital Officer, playing an essential role in content production for all communication platforms.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communication Officer will have several key responsibilities, including:
Producing editorial content in Dutch, which involves planning and monitoring the overall publication calendar, creating the magazine (including editorial committee work, writing articles, gathering illustrations, and collaborating with external graphic designers), and preparing the annual report (involving editorial committee work, article writing, gathering illustrations, and working with graphic designers).
Producing printed communication materials for the entire department, such as general informative brochures or materials requested for specific activities (e.g., legacies, corporate communications), which includes writing articles, gathering illustrations, collaborating with external graphic designers, and overseeing the printing process.
Producing content for awareness-raising or fundraising campaigns, translating content from French or English to Dutch, and occasionally proofreading Dutch documents.
Managing all contacts with external service providers (graphic designers, printers), requesting quotes, monitoring schedules, and overseeing invoicing.
Producing content (in Dutch) for digital communication, including writing social media posts, creating photos/videos/visuals for social media, writing articles for the website and newsletter content, and regularly updating the website (thematic pages, news, etc.), as well as translating content from French or English to Dutch.
Supporting fundraising activities, including thematic pages, email campaigns, and fundraising letters (mailings).
Maintaining internal contacts with the entire Handicap International network, including internal communication staff, the communication and fundraising team of the federation, and personnel at the headquarters in Brussels, as well as external contacts and service providers such as printers, graphic designers, and translation agencies.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Communication Officer position should possess the following qualifications: - Excellent command of the Dutch language. - Good knowledge of French and English. - Exceptional writing skills. - A university degree or higher education in communication/journalism or equivalent professional experience. - Proficiency in basic office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). - Familiarity with Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Cloud, and/or design tools (such as Canva) is a plus. - A strong understanding of social media and digital media. - Experience in the non-profit sector is an advantage. - Ability to manage projects and work independently and in an organized manner.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a university degree or higher education in communication, journalism, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may also be considered acceptable. The educational background should equip the candidate with the necessary skills to effectively communicate and produce content for various platforms.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have relevant experience in communication, particularly in producing content for various media channels. Experience in the non-profit sector is considered a plus, as it demonstrates an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within this field. Candidates should also have experience managing projects and working collaboratively within a team.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is Dutch, with excellent proficiency required. Good knowledge of French and English is also necessary, as the role involves translating content and collaborating with colleagues who speak these languages. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This is a replacement contract from January 1, 2026, to May 20, 2026, and is a full-time position. The workplace is located in the Naamsepoort area of Brussels, with the possibility of remote work.
