Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is primarily focused on outreach and communication activities within the UNEP Brussels Office. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Communications/Information Assistant and will be involved in various communication tasks such as drafting web articles and reports, contributing to newsletters, managing social media content, and developing promotional materials. The role also includes supporting outreach strategies to enhance UNEP's visibility in environmental and development fields, organizing high-level visits and public outreach activities, and managing information exchange tools related to EU policies and funding opportunities. The internship is expected to start on 10 March 2026 and will last for a duration of 6 months.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including:
  • Drafting web articles and reports from events organized by the UNEP Brussels Office.
  • Contributing to the creation of internal and external e-newsletters.
  • Assisting in managing the Europe Office's social media channels, focusing on messaging relevant to EU audiences.
  • Developing promotional materials such as event invitations, brochures, and web features.
  • Proofreading and editing documents to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Supporting the implementation of outreach strategies to raise UNEP's profile in development and environmental sectors.
  • Assisting in organizing high-level visits and events, including the launch of UNEP reports in Brussels.
  • Supporting public outreach activities in Belgium, particularly during significant campaigns and events.
  • Collaborating with other UN entities on joint events and visibility opportunities. 1
  • Contributing to local activities with Belgian authorities and managing updates of UNEP's online tools for information exchange with the EU.

Required Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree, or enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs.
  • A field of study closely related to the internship is required, with preferred areas including communication/journalism, international relations/European studies, or environmental studies.
  • Proficiency in standard software applications and IT knowledge for developing visual products is essential.
  • Strong writing skills are necessary, including the ability to synthesize texts and draft articles and social media messages.
  • A demonstrated interest in environmental issues, the United Nations, and international governance is required, along with knowledge of EU institutions and policies.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be in their final year of a bachelor's degree or enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. The educational background should be in a field relevant to the internship, such as communication, international relations, or environmental studies.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to communication, environmental issues, or international relations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French and/or Dutch is desirable, as these languages are also relevant in the context of the EU and the work of UNEP in Brussels.
