Job Overview: The Regional Gender Statistics Consultant will oversee the regional implementation of the Women Count initiative, providing knowledge and capacity development services to UN Women offices and project teams. The consultant will support strategic engagement at the regional level, build partnerships, advocate for better gender data, and contribute to knowledge generation in gender statistics and SDGs monitoring. This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and international organizations, to strengthen gender data use and support the localization and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The consultant will report to the Deputy Regional Director of UN Women ROAS and the Chief of the Research and Data Section of UN Women HQ in New York, ensuring that regional activities align with the overall objectives of Women Count.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage and oversee the implementation of the Women Count initiative at the regional level, ensuring adherence to quality standards.
Lead the planning of regional projects and activities, preparing budgets and reporting on performance.
Support periodic regional monitoring reports on SDG targets related to gender equality.
Provide knowledge and capacity development services to UN Women offices, producing templates and guidance notes for gender statistics monitoring.
Offer technical support to countries on gender statistics and SDGs monitoring, establishing a roster of thematic consultants.
Organize training for UN Women country offices to build capacity in gender statistics.
Develop partnerships with governments, donors, and civil society to implement regional initiatives.
Facilitate South-South cooperation and support discussions on regional adaptations of SDG indicators.
Contribute to workshops and training events related to statistics and SDGs monitoring. 1
Promote UN Women's work in gender statistics and initiate resource mobilization efforts.
Required Qualifications:
Excellent knowledge of current policies and practices in gender statistics.
Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate a diverse team.
Knowledge of UN intergovernmental processes and SDGs monitoring frameworks.
Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication skills, with expertise in writing policy and program documents.
Ability to establish good relations with government counterparts and partners.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree or equivalent in gender statistics, public health, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in gender statistics is required, along with experience in gender equality and women's empowerment. Experience working within the UN system and in the Arab States region is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of another UN official working language (Arabic or French) is desirable.
