Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position at FAO's Liaison Office with Japan involves supporting the identification, monitoring, and reporting of information related to FAO and food security in Japanese media. The volunteer will engage in a broad search of topics, contributing to the office's efforts to disseminate relevant information to the public and identify potential risks for FAO's outreach. This role is essential for promoting awareness of food security issues and FAO's initiatives in Japan, particularly in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG2, which focuses on ending hunger and ensuring food security.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will be responsible for several key tasks:
  • Discussing and defining parameters for the identification and reporting of relevant information.
  • Determining the methodology for screening sources and establishing a reporting tool.
  • Conducting screening of sources as defined by the parameters set.
  • Reporting information accurately in the reporting tool, including any concerns regarding misinformation or false reporting.
  • Searching for relevant FAO content to translate into Japanese.
  • Drafting social media posts, press releases, and other communication content. This role allows the volunteer to work closely with the Communications Specialist and the LOJ Administrative Assistant, fostering teamwork and collaboration.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong analytical skills and a keen interest in food security and agricultural issues. They should be proficient in both Japanese and English, with excellent written communication skills in both languages. Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools is essential. The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment is also important, as is a commitment to promoting accurate and trustworthy information dissemination.

Educational Background:
A background in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have a strong understanding of food security issues and the role of international organizations in addressing these challenges. Relevant coursework or experience in media monitoring, research, or public relations would be advantageous.

Experience:
While prior experience in a similar role is not mandatory, candidates with experience in media monitoring, communications, or volunteer work in related fields will be given preference. The position is suitable for individuals looking to gain experience in international organizations and enhance their skills in communication and information dissemination.

Languages:
Proficiency in Japanese is mandatory, as the volunteer will be working primarily with Japanese media. English proficiency is also required for communication with the FAO team and for understanding FAO materials. Additional languages may be considered an asset but are not required.
