Job Overview: The position of Statistician is crucial for the ILO's efforts to support the Government of Syria in implementing a Labour Force Survey (LFS). This position requires a proactive approach to capacity building and collaboration with national counterparts, as well as the ability to communicate complex statistical concepts to diverse audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical assistance in designing and implementing the Labour Force Survey in accordance with ICLS guidelines and ILO standards, including questionnaire development and sampling strategies.
Lead capacity-building workshops for CBS staff and national stakeholders on survey methodology, data collection, and analysis.
Support the preparation and validation of the pilot survey, ensuring quality control and effective training for field staff.
Ensure the survey generates relevant statistics on labor migration and displacement.
Guide data quality assurance processes, including cleaning and anonymizing microdata.
Oversee the national survey roll-out, reviewing instruments and training materials.
Analyze survey results and contribute to technical reports and dissemination materials.
Establish a sustainable data ecosystem within CBS for ongoing labor market monitoring.
Coordinate with national and international experts and partners involved in labor market data collection. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in Statistics, Economics, Demography, or a related field. An advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in survey statistics, labor economics, or quantitative social research is highly desirable. Candidates should have a strong understanding of labor statistics and international statistical standards, as well as proven experience in quantitative methods, sampling design, and survey implementation. Familiarity with ICLS standards and classifications is preferred, along with the ability to conduct data analysis and communicate findings effectively to non-technical audiences.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a first-level university degree in a relevant field such as Statistics, Economics, or Demography. An advanced degree, particularly in survey statistics or labor economics, is considered a strong asset and will enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have at least one year of relevant professional experience in designing, implementing, or analyzing household surveys or labor force surveys. Experience in data collection, cleaning, and statistical analysis using software such as STATA, SPSS, or R is essential. Familiarity with working in fragile or post-conflict settings, particularly with national statistical offices, is advantageous.
