Job Overview:
The Gender and Rule of Law Intern position is a six-month, unpaid internship based in New York, USA, within the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). This internship is designed to provide support in advancing international gender equality norms and the implementation of Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The intern will work under the supervision of the Gender Affairs Officer and will be involved in various tasks aimed at enhancing coordination, understanding policy gaps, and increasing visibility of OROLSI’s impact on gender equality. The role is primarily in-person but can be adjusted to accommodate part-time or remote work based on the candidate's needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Organizing meetings for the OROLSI Coordination Group on WPS, which involves preparing presentations, sending invites, taking notes, and coordinating with gender focal points.
  • Managing the OROLSI WPS knowledge hub on Microsoft Teams, ensuring that events are updated, documents are saved, and information is shared among group members.
  • Attending meetings and events, preparing concise summary notes, and supporting the development of inputs for relevant UN reports.
  • Assisting in the development of a study on accelerating gender equality in rule of law and security institutions, including collecting information and managing datasets related to gender equality.
  • Supporting consultations with OROLSI staff and external partners, and developing an online survey.
  • Creating communication deliverables, including a webpage on gender equality and WPS, and assisting in disseminating content through various channels.
  • Performing any other duties as required by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Candidates must be students in their final year of a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in fields related to gender studies, international relations, law, social sciences, or other relevant disciplines. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required, and those pursuing or having completed a master’s or Ph.D. program are also eligible to apply.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the responsibilities of the position. Experience in research, data management, or gender-related projects would be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week, although part-time options of 20 hours per week and remote work may be considered based on the successful candidate's needs.
