Job Overview:
This internship is situated within the Education Outreach Section of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications, focusing on the Human Rights portfolio. The internship aims to support the United Nations Outreach Programme related to the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative. Interns will engage with institutions of higher education to promote the realization of UN goals and mandates. The position is designed to be full-time and in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York, with a minimum commitment of four months and the possibility of extension up to six months. Interns will work under the supervision of a UN staff member, assisting with various tasks related to human rights and outreach initiatives. The internship may also accommodate part-time arrangements based on the successful candidates' needs, and a hybrid or remote setting may be considered upon request.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including conducting research on thematic issues related to the UN Outreach Programme on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. They will assist in drafting, formatting, and editing original website content, including graphics, photographs, and videos. Additionally, interns will help create social media content about the UN Outreach Programme, plan and organize events, maintain databases, and provide general office support. Specific duties may include researching speakers for events, preparing invitations and promotional materials, and assisting in the production of multimedia content. Interns will also be expected to engage in internet research on UN principles and mandates, including the Sustainable Development Goals and Global Citizenship Education.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, or a related area. While professional work experience is not required, a relevant field of study is essential. Candidates should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds are also necessary.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. The educational background should be closely related to the internship's focus areas, such as communication, media studies, or international relations.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge in areas such as writing, social media, and multimedia production. An assessment of writing skills may be conducted prior to an interview, highlighting the importance of effective communication in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is desirable. The official languages of the United Nations include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, and proficiency in any of these languages can enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns must provide their own hardware (computer), software, and internet connection if working remotely. The internship is full-time, requiring a commitment of 35 hours per week, but part-time arrangements may be considered.
