Job Overview:
The Wash Specialist Sector Coordinator plays a crucial role in leading and coordinating the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector response in Chad, particularly in emergency situations. This position requires the post holder to be based in the field, reporting to the Emergency Coordinator and Chief Field Office. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring a well-coordinated and effective response to humanitarian needs, building relationships with stakeholders, and facilitating collaboration among various partners. The role involves strategic planning, resource mobilization, and advocacy to improve sectoral outcomes, as well as monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. The coordinator must also ensure accountability to affected populations and strengthen local capacities for a sustainable response.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities of the Wash Specialist Sector Coordinator include:
  • Coordination, representation, and leadership: Establishing and maintaining effective coordination mechanisms, ensuring alignment with national priorities, and building partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Needs assessment and analysis: Contributing to the planning and implementation of needs assessments, analyzing data, and collaborating with partners to create analytical products.
  • Strategic response planning: Contributing to strategic planning and response prioritization, ensuring all program delivery modalities are considered, and providing technical support to partners.
  • Resource mobilization and advocacy: Supporting partners in resource mobilization, monitoring the sector's financial situation, and advocating for improved outcomes.
  • Implementation and monitoring: Monitoring and evaluating the response against sector strategies, ensuring adherence to humanitarian principles, and reporting on progress.
  • Accountability to affected populations: Establishing feedback mechanisms, promoting inclusion, and adhering to safeguarding policies.
  • Strengthening local capacity: Encouraging local participation, developing capacity assessment strategies, and leading emergency preparedness efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong leadership and coordination skills, with the ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. They should demonstrate a commitment to humanitarian principles and have experience in emergency response and WASH programming. Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills are essential, along with the ability to advocate effectively for improved sectoral outcomes. Candidates should also have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in challenging environments.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in public health, environmental science, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in WASH or humanitarian response are highly desirable.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in WASH programming, emergency response, or related fields. Experience working in humanitarian contexts, particularly in Chad or similar environments, is preferred. Proven experience in coordination and leadership roles within the WASH sector is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in French is highly desirable. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Chad would be an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in Farchana, Chad, where living conditions can be challenging. The role is full-time and may involve travel to various locations within the country. UNICEF provides accommodation for international staff in a guest house, and the monthly rent is approximately XAF 250,00
