Job Overview:
The position involves engaging in the construction of Mud-block production sheds and latrines in two specific locations in Ethiopia, namely Darera Arba in the Oromia Region and Awbere town in the Somali Region. The project is part of UN-Habitat’s initiative to strengthen the resilience of disaster-affected communities through durable solutions. The selected implementing partner will be responsible for overseeing the construction activities, ensuring that they meet the required standards and specifications. This role requires collaboration with local authorities and communities to ensure that the construction meets the needs of the residents and contributes to their long-term resilience against disasters.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct site assessments and prepare detailed construction plans for Mud-block production sheds and latrines.
  • Manage and supervise the construction process, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with local stakeholders, including community members and government officials, to ensure project alignment with local needs.
  • Monitor project progress and prepare regular reports on construction activities and expenditures.
  • Ensure that all construction materials are sourced responsibly and sustainably.
  • Facilitate training sessions for local workers on construction techniques and maintenance of facilities.
  • Address any issues or challenges that arise during the construction process promptly and effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with UN-Habitat’s policies and procedures throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in construction project management, particularly in rural or disaster-affected areas.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable construction practices and materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with UN-Habitat’s mission and objectives is an advantage.

Educational Background:
A degree in civil engineering, construction management, architecture, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in project management or sustainable construction practices will be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in construction management or related fields is required. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs in similar projects is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Oromia and Somali regions of Ethiopia is an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local communities.

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position with a contract duration aligned with the project timeline. The selected implementing partner will be expected to submit a detailed proposal outlining their approach to the project, including timelines and budget estimates. Compensation will be based on the proposal and will adhere to UN-Habitat’s guidelines.
