Job Overview:
The internship program at the IAEA is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical work experience that aligns with their academic studies or interests. Interns will have the opportunity to engage with the IAEA's work and the broader United Nations framework, gaining insights into international nuclear safety and security efforts. The internship typically lasts between 9 to 12 months, allowing interns to immerse themselves in the organization's operations and contribute meaningfully to its projects. Interns will work closely with professional scientific staff, particularly in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, which focuses on protecting people and the environment from radiation exposure. The role will involve supporting the collection and compilation of data related to environmental and radiological impact assessments, particularly through the DIRATA database, which tracks discharges from nuclear facilities globally.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Contributing to the collection and compilation of discharge data from IAEA Member States for the DIRATA database for the years 2024-202
  • Reviewing, compiling, and interpreting various data sources to assess the radiological impact of radionuclide releases into the environment.
  • Assisting in the development of updated datasets that describe the transfer of radionuclides in the marine environment, including concentration ratios to marine products.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on digital learning materials developed by the Unit.
  • Producing datasets suitable for upload onto the IAEA Open Data Platform.
  • Creating presentations and notes summarizing the work undertaken during the internship.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in relevant fields such as Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Environmental Sciences, Physics, or Chemistry. They should have experience handling large datasets and demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required, and familiarity with basic statistical techniques is considered an asset. A foundational understanding of radiation principles is also advantageous.

Educational Background:
Applicants must be at least 20 years old and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time university studies towards a first degree. Candidates may apply within one year of completing their bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important that candidates have not previously participated in the IAEA's internship program, ensuring fresh perspectives and new contributions to the organization.

Experience:
The internship is aimed at individuals who are either currently pursuing their studies or have recently graduated. Therefore, while specific professional experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the internship's focus areas. Experience in data handling and analysis will be beneficial for the role.

Languages:
Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential for all candidates. Additionally, fluency in any other IAEA official language—such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian—is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a diverse international community.

Additional Notes:
The internship is structured as a full-time position, with a duration of 9 to 12 months. Candidates are required to submit two signed letters of recommendation along with their application. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into the workings of an international organization and contribute to significant global issues related to nuclear safety and security.
