Job Overview: The Communications Associate position is crucial for supporting UNHCR's communications strategies and objectives in India, particularly in the context of the significant refugee population in the country. The role involves executing a wide range of communications activities, including media relations, social media engagement, multimedia content production, and public outreach campaigns. The incumbent will work closely with the Assistant External Relations Officer and will be responsible for managing the external engagement of UNHCR's Chief of Mission and Deputy Chief of Mission. Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the implementation of communications strategies for various countries and special projects, identifying thematic priorities and target audiences to meet UNHCR's communications objectives.
Monitor news and popular trends to integrate UNHCR's messaging into ongoing conversations and identify key moments for proactive communications.
Forge strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations to produce and promote UNHCR content and messaging, while providing research insights to enhance communications.
Develop authoritative content that leads the narrative on forced displacement, including interviews, press releases, and multimedia storytelling to generate empathy and mobilize action.
Ensure maximum impact of created content by developing distribution strategies and boosting visibility on relevant channels.
Monitor the implementation of communications projects and make necessary adjustments.
Assist in the preparation, editing, and production of professional media materials for target audiences, ensuring timely dissemination and high-quality standards.
Continuously upgrade communications skills and stay informed about emerging platforms and tools, reviewing media impact results for learning purposes.
Assist in implementing campaigns and events that support UNHCR's strategic objectives. 1
Undertake missions and field trips with media and official visitors to support UNHCR's work. 1
Identify and manage risks while seizing opportunities impacting objectives. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications, along with strong drafting skills. Essential qualifications include experience in implementing communications strategies, professional writing and editing skills, and experience working on advocacy campaigns. Familiarity with UNHCR's regulatory framework and a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity are also required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate advanced technical skills in digital communication tools, including social media platforms and content management systems, as well as proficiency in design and editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Educational Background: The position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma with 3 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with 2 years of relevant work experience. Candidates should have a background in Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities, or related fields, with certifications in these areas being highly desirable.
Experience: The role requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience for candidates with a High School Diploma, or 2 years of relevant experience for those with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Experience in communications, media relations, and advocacy campaigns is essential, along with a proven track record in producing impactful communication products.
Languages: Knowledge of English is mandatory, and familiarity with the UN working language of the duty station is required if it is not English. For national professional jobs, knowledge of the local language is also necessary. Proficiency in additional languages is considered an asset.
