Job Overview:
The AI and Data for Peace and Security Intern position is an opportunity for individuals to engage with the United Nations' Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and the Information Management Unit (IMU). This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in the field of data management and analysis, focusing on peace and security initiatives. Interns will work closely with the Peace and Security Data Hub team, contributing to projects that aim to enhance the department's data ecosystem. The role requires a strong interest in political, human rights, or humanitarian affairs, along with technical skills in data management, analysis, and artificial intelligence. Interns will have the chance to learn about the UN's operations and contribute to strategic initiatives that support peacekeeping efforts globally.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for assisting in the development and management of data systems and processes that support the DPO's peacekeeping operations. This includes conducting data analysis, contributing to the design and implementation of data-driven solutions, and collaborating with team members on various projects. Interns will also be expected to engage in research activities, support the development of reports and presentations, and participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and outcomes. Additionally, interns may be involved in training sessions and workshops aimed at enhancing the team's technical capabilities and understanding of data management best practices.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Desired qualifications include a proactive approach to applying emerging technologies, familiarity with self-service analytical tools, and experience with relational databases. Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment are essential.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in fields such as Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related area. A strong academic background is crucial, and applicants must provide proof of their current educational status or qualifications as part of the application process.

Experience:
While prior professional experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic or project experience in data management, analysis, or related fields. Experience with tools and technologies relevant to data analysis and management will be considered an asset, particularly in the context of peace and security operations.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, is advantageous. The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages can enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week, with the possibility of part-time arrangements.
