Job Overview: The Livestock Specialist position is critical for providing technical expertise on livestock-related inputs to achieve project outcomes, particularly in the context of the USAID-funded project aimed at reviving livelihoods, food security, and nutrition for flood-affected populations in Sindh. The role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including government agencies, partner organizations, and community groups, to implement project activities effectively. The Livestock Specialist will be responsible for ensuring best practices in livestock management are adopted across the provincial program, enhancing the capacity of FAO field teams, and contributing to the overall success of the livestock sector in the targeted areas. This position requires a proactive approach to addressing the needs of community organizations and facilitating sustainable livestock rearing practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Livestock Specialist will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: liaising with stakeholders such as implementing partners, livestock service providers, and government agencies; providing specialized technical assistance for project activities; monitoring livestock health management and production methods; supporting community organizations and producer groups; conducting capacity-building initiatives for FAO field teams; preparing technical specifications for livestock inputs; assisting in the implementation of training programs; contributing to baseline and end-line assessments; preparing project reports and success stories; and providing cross-sectoral technical support to other FAO teams. The role also involves ensuring compliance with FAO standards and guidelines in all communications and project documentation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced (Masters) university degree in veterinary science and have a minimum of eight years of experience in development projects within the livestock sector or related fields. Knowledge of the Sindh livestock herd characteristics and production systems is essential. Additionally, candidates should have a working knowledge of English, with knowledge of the local language, Sindhi, being desirable. Nationality as a citizen of Pakistan is also a requirement for this position.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced (Masters) degree in veterinary science from an accredited institution. Candidates must ensure that their qualifications are recognized by the World Higher Education Database (WHED), which is maintained by the International Association of Universities and UNESCO.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of eight years of relevant experience in development projects related to the livestock sector or private sector livestock operations. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of livestock management practices and the specific challenges faced in the Sindh region. Experience working in diverse locations or areas of work is also beneficial, as is the ability to manage complex situations and work under pressure.
Languages: A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of the local language, Sindhi, is considered desirable and would enhance communication with local stakeholders and communities.
