Job Overview:
The National Environmental Management Specialist will play a crucial role in the iCOAST Project, which aims to enhance environmental management and sustainability practices in Jamaica. This position involves supporting the Lead Consultant and collaborating with other team members to analyze environmental data, identify threats to ecosystems, and integrate sustainable practices and policies into the project framework. The specialist will be expected to contribute to the development of strategies that promote environmental sustainability and resilience, ensuring that project activities align with national and international environmental standards. The role requires a strong understanding of environmental issues, data analysis, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Environmental Management Specialist include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting comprehensive analyses of environmental data to identify trends, threats, and opportunities for sustainable management.
  • Collaborating with the Lead Consultant and project team to develop and implement strategies that promote environmental sustainability within the iCOAST Project framework.
  • Engaging with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to gather input and foster collaboration on environmental initiatives.
  • Preparing detailed reports and presentations on environmental assessments, findings, and recommendations for project stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of implemented environmental strategies and practices, providing feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Supporting capacity-building efforts by providing training and resources to stakeholders on sustainable environmental practices.
  • Ensuring compliance with national and international environmental regulations and standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in environmental science, management, or a related field. A proven track record of working on environmental projects, particularly in the context of sustainable development, is essential. The ideal candidate should have excellent analytical skills, the ability to interpret complex environmental data, and experience in stakeholder engagement. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary to effectively convey findings and recommendations to diverse audiences. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and a passion for environmental conservation.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental management, or a related field is required. A master's degree or higher qualification in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of environmental policies, regulations, and best practices, as well as familiarity with data analysis tools and methodologies.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 5 years of professional experience in environmental management or a related field. Experience working on projects that focus on sustainable development, ecosystem management, or environmental policy is highly desirable. Proven experience in data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and project management will be considered an advantage. Familiarity with the local environmental context in Jamaica and previous work with UNDP or similar organizations will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication for this position. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly Spanish or French, would be considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered as an individual contractor role, with a contract duration of 65 days over a seven-month period. The work is expected to be conducted in Jamaica, and candidates should be prepared to engage with local stakeholders and travel as necessary.
