The French Translation Service is responsible for translating parliamentary documents from English and other languages into French. Job Overview: The Senior Reviser plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and accuracy of translations within the French Translation Service. This position involves revising translations and original summary records that cover a wide range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those that are sensitive, complex, or technical in nature. The incumbent is expected to exceed workload standards and meet deadlines while providing constructive feedback to help colleagues develop their skills as translators and précis-writers. The role also includes drafting and revising summary records, utilizing language technologies, and contributing to the professional development of staff through coaching and training activities. The Senior Reviser is responsible for coordinating and supervising the work of revisers and translators, ensuring quality control of translations, and advising the Chief of Service on various operational matters. This position requires a proactive approach to learning and skill development, as well as the ability to lead team efforts in data collection and analysis for informed decision-making.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Reviser will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including: revising translations and original summary records, translating texts on a self-revising basis, drafting and revising summary records, utilizing language technologies effectively, directing the identification of new terminology, contributing to staff development through coaching and training, coordinating the work of revisers and translators, performing quality control of translations, advising on competitive examinations, managing policy and operational matters, undertaking cross-assignments, leading data collection efforts, acting as First Reporting Officer, and serving as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Chief. The role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and teamwork, as well as effective planning and organizing skills.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status. Additionally, passing the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for French Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters, and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors is required. Candidates should demonstrate a high level of professionalism, teamwork, planning, and leadership skills, as well as the ability to manage performance effectively.
Educational Background: A first-level degree from a recognized university or an equivalent institution is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for understanding complex texts and subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly in the fields of political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical matters.
Experience: A minimum of ten years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading, or production editing is required. Candidates should have experience in using standard computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and at least eight years of experience working in a multilingual setting. Furthermore, a minimum of four years of revision experience is necessary to ensure that candidates are well-equipped to handle the complexities of the role.
Languages: Fluency in French is required, as it must be the candidate's main language. Additionally, candidates must have knowledge of English and preferably one other official United Nations language, as assessed through the relevant United Nations competitive examination.
