UN Public Information Intern

Job Overview:
The internship is situated within the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. This department plays a crucial role in disseminating trusted information to the public, civil society, and Member States, effectively communicating the UN's narrative globally. The Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section specifically focuses on raising awareness and understanding of human rights issues through education, public engagement, and advocacy. The intern will be involved in projects aimed at promoting equality, combating discrimination, and fostering respect for human dignity and rights. The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in developing educational and communication materials, contributing to outreach initiatives, and enhancing digital resources related to the UN's work on human rights and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The position is full-time, requiring 35 hours per week, and is expected to last for a minimum of four months, with the possibility of extension up to six months, starting in October 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for conducting research on thematic issues related to human rights, equality, and anti-discrimination, contributing to the development of educational and communication products. This includes drafting and editing content for websites, news stories, and social media, as well as synthesizing research findings for project materials. The intern will also support the creation of audiovisual deliverables, requiring proficiency in video production and editing software. Additional responsibilities include developing presentations, participating in project planning and coordination, and contributing recommendations for outreach initiatives and events. The role demands creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or be in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, or international relations. While professional work experience is not required, a relevant field of study is essential. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds are also necessary, along with skills in writing, social media, and multimedia production.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (Master’s or Ph.D.) or be in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program. Proof of enrollment or completion is required at the time of application. The educational background should be closely related to the internship's focus areas, such as journalism, communication, media studies, or international relations.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. The internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in a UN setting.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is desirable. The UN Secretariat recognizes six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, and proficiency in any of these languages can be an asset.

This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must obtain a G-4 visa to undertake the internship. The UN does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and applicants must ensure they have the necessary work authorization before starting the internship. The position is primarily in-person, but adjustments can be made to accommodate part-time or remote work based on the successful candidate's needs.
