Job Overview: The Political Affairs Officer will serve as the Team Leader of the Guidance and Learning Unit within the DPPA. This role involves overseeing the development and implementation of knowledge management strategies, guidance materials, and training programs aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of Special Political Missions (SPMs). The officer will collaborate with various UN entities and external partners to promote policies and initiatives that support the UN's peace and security agenda. The position requires strong analytical skills to prepare reports and brief senior officials on sensitive matters, as well as the ability to represent the DPPA in interagency policy forums. The officer will also be responsible for managing project activities and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Political Affairs Officer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: leading the Guidance and Learning Unit and overseeing its work; developing and promoting policies and training for the DPPA; managing the knowledge management system and conducting lessons learned exercises; providing support to regional desks and SPMs; preparing analytical reports and drafting correspondence for senior UN officials; representing the DPPA at interagency policy forums; collaborating with other units within the Division; and performing administrative functions related to staff planning and budget management. The officer will also participate in conferences and seminars relevant to their area of expertise and contribute to the overall management of the Policy and Mediation Division.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in political science, international relations, or related fields, with a minimum of seven years of relevant experience. They should have demonstrated knowledge of the UN's work in peace and security, particularly in conflict prevention and peacemaking. Experience in knowledge management, guidance development, and strategic planning is essential. Familiarity with the work of Special Political Missions and experience in leading teams are desirable. Candidates should also have project development and management experience, along with results-based budgeting skills.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or other related fields is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in these fields combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of professional experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the UN's operations in peace and security, including experience with conflict prevention and peacemaking efforts. Familiarity with knowledge management practices and strategic planning is also necessary, along with experience in Special Political Missions and team leadership.
Languages: English is the mandatory working language for this position, with a required proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is considered a good to have language, but English proficiency is essential for effective communication within the UN Secretariat.
