Job Overview: The Data Analytics and Visualization Intern position is designed for individuals eager to gain practical experience in data analytics and project management within the United Nations framework. The intern will be involved in analyzing human resources data, creating insightful visualizations, and supporting various innovation projects. This role is situated within the Global Strategy and Policy Division (GSPD) of the Office of Human Resources (OHR), under the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). The intern will work closely with a Human Resources Officer and is expected to engage in a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week, with the possibility of adjusting hours based on the intern's requests. The internship duration ranges from 3 to 6 months, providing a comprehensive learning experience in a dynamic international environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Conducting qualitative and quantitative data analytics of human resources data to prepare reports for senior management, departments, offices, and missions.
Cleaning and organizing raw data, utilizing descriptive statistics to gain insights, analyzing trends, and creating visualizations of workforce data.
Preparing presentations and other communication materials, including digital graphic designs using relevant data visualization software.
Supporting innovation projects by developing lightweight prototypes, demos, and data visualizations that demonstrate the project's value to stakeholders.
Simplifying complex datasets into accessible and innovative visualizations to ensure clear communication of insights.
Participating in team brainstorming sessions, contributing creative ideas, and providing constructive critiques to refine and innovate project concepts.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While prior professional work experience is not required, applicants must have a field of study closely related to the internship. Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint are essential, along with good skills in SQL, Power BI, Power Automate, Access, and Word.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with a strong academic background in fields related to data analytics, human resources, or a similar discipline. Enrollment in a graduate program or completion of a Master’s or Ph.D. program is also acceptable. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided during the application process.
Experience: No previous internship or work experience is required for this position. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong eagerness to learn and the ability to deliver quality results in a timely manner. Performance will be evaluated based on the intern's engagement, creativity, and analytical skills throughout the internship.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and candidates are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States may need to obtain a G-4 visa for full-time internships. Candidates on non-immigrant student visas (F-1 or J-1) with employment authorization may only intern on a part-time basis. Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a dataset-related task as part of the selection process, and those with compelling submissions will be invited for an interview.
