Job Overview:
The Language Intern position at the United Nations offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in the field of international communications and media. The intern will work under the guidance of the UN Web TV website Language manager and the Chief of the Unit, contributing to the daily live and on-demand streaming of UN meetings and events. This role involves training on a cloud video platform to upload videos and relevant language metadata for publishing on the UN Web TV website. Additionally, the intern may assist with streaming content on social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in a dynamic and multicultural environment, allowing the intern to engage with various aspects of UN communications and media operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Language Intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Assisting in the daily live and on-demand streaming of United Nations meetings and events through the UN Web TV platform.
  • Learning to use a cloud video platform for uploading videos and relevant metadata for publication.
  • Supporting the live and on-demand streaming on social media accounts, including the UN's YouTube channel, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Collaborating with the Language manager and other team members to ensure high-quality content delivery.
  • Engaging in additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor, which may include drafting news articles, creating social media posts, and designing surveys or polls.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet specific criteria:
  • Enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or enrollment in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level).
  • Proficiency in standard word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
  • A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable, as well as the ability to design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a relevant academic program. This includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or having completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. The field of study should be closely related to the internship role, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary theoretical knowledge to complement their practical experience.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study that aligns closely with the internship's focus. This means that candidates should ideally have some academic background or coursework related to communications, media, international relations, or a similar field that would enhance their understanding and performance in the role.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.

This internship is offered on an in-person, full-time basis for an expected duration of 4-6 months.
