Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) was established to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa, guided by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 206
ECA operates as a premier knowledge institution, focusing on bringing global solutions to Africa's problems while also addressing local solutions. The organization is involved in developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation, designing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and advocating for Africa's position at the global level. ECA is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and employs a diverse workforce dedicated to improving the economic and social conditions across the continent.
Job Overview: The internship program is situated within the Macroeconomics, Finance and Governance Division (MFGD) of the ECA. Interns will work under the supervision of the Director of MFGD and the Chief of the Macroeconomic Analysis Section. The primary responsibility of the intern will be to conduct analysis for the macroeconomic chapter of the Economic Report on Africa, focusing on sources of growth and growth forecasts under various scenarios. This role is crucial for supporting member States in their economic transformation and inclusive growth efforts. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in macroeconomic analysis and development planning, contributing to the intern's professional growth and understanding of the UN's mission in Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that may include: conducting research and analysis on economic growth sources, labor markets, and demographic trends in Africa; providing inputs and editing flagship publications; liaising with stakeholders within the MFGD; assisting with outreach activities; and participating in the operational tasks of the Division. Daily responsibilities will vary based on the intern's background and assigned office, but will generally involve reporting on key meetings, developing presentations, and contributing to the overall work of the Section.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, applicants must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second-level university degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals, as well as the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Proficiency in standard software applications is essential, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Teams.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program or have completed such a program. This educational background is critical as it ensures that interns possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to contribute effectively to the work of the ECA.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This could include research projects, academic papers, or relevant volunteer work that demonstrates an understanding of macroeconomic principles and development issues.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French is considered an advantage, as it enhances communication within the organization and with member States.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days per week, totaling 35 hours. The expected duration of the internship is 3 months, with the possibility of extension based on the needs of the Section. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be cautious of any requests for personal financial information.
