Job Overview:
The position of International Consultant to Provide Inputs for Threatened and Endangered Species is part of the Adaptation to Climate Change in the Coastal Zone of Vanuatu – Phase II (V-CAP II) project. The consultant will be responsible for providing expert inputs and recommendations regarding the conservation and management of threatened and endangered species in Vanuatu. This role requires a deep understanding of biodiversity, conservation strategies, and the specific challenges faced by species in the region. The consultant will work closely with local stakeholders, government agencies, and other partners to develop effective strategies that align with national and international conservation goals. The assignment is expected to last for 85 working days over a period of 6 months, during which the consultant will conduct assessments, engage with local communities, and provide actionable recommendations to enhance the conservation efforts in Vanuatu.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current status of threatened and endangered species in Vanuatu, including their habitats and threats they face.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community groups, to gather data and insights on species conservation.
  • Develop a detailed report outlining the findings of the assessment, including recommendations for conservation strategies and actions.
  • Facilitate workshops and meetings with stakeholders to discuss findings and gather feedback on proposed strategies.
  • Provide technical expertise in the development of conservation plans and policies that address the needs of threatened and endangered species.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of conservation strategies and provide ongoing support to stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports to UNDP and other relevant parties throughout the assignment.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of biodiversity conservation, particularly in the context of island ecosystems.
  • Proven experience in conducting assessments and developing conservation strategies for threatened and endangered species.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with the legal and policy frameworks related to biodiversity conservation in Vanuatu and the Pacific region.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a strong educational background, ideally holding an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field such as environmental science, biology, ecology, or conservation biology. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of biodiversity and the specific challenges faced by threatened and endangered species.

Experience:
Candidates should have significant experience in biodiversity conservation, particularly in relation to threatened and endangered species. A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience is preferred, with a demonstrated track record of successfully implementing conservation projects or conducting research in similar contexts. Experience working in the Pacific region or with island ecosystems will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all reports and communications will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Vanuatu would be considered an advantage, as it may facilitate better engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as an individual contractor role, and the contract duration is for 85 working days over a period of 6 months. The consultant will be expected to work remotely and may need to travel to Vanuatu as required for stakeholder engagement and field assessments. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and the consultant will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements if travel to Vanuatu is necessary.
