Job Overview: The Director, Development and Outreach position at Human Rights Watch in Paris is a pivotal role that involves leading fundraising and outreach initiatives in France. The successful candidate will work closely with the HRW France Director, who oversees advocacy and communications. The Director will be responsible for mobilizing support from donors and prospects, particularly through the Paris Committee, which is a network of close supporters. This role requires strategic planning and execution of fundraising events, nurturing donor relationships, and enhancing HRW's presence in France. The Director will report to the Managing Director of Development and Outreach for Europe and the Asia Pacific region and will supervise at least one team member. The position requires a commitment to work from the Paris office at least 2-3 days a week, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director will develop and oversee a strategic plan, budget, and income forecast for fundraising in France, focusing on Paris. Key responsibilities include seeking and securing philanthropic commitments from individual and foundation donors, identifying and developing strategic fundraising initiatives, and collaborating with the Paris Committee and Board members to maximize fundraising results. The Director will also represent HRW to existing and prospective supporters, help build a structure for legacy giving, and ensure sustainable growth in line with financial targets. Additional responsibilities include overseeing income tracking, projections, and expenditure budgets, as well as leading and mentoring direct reports, promoting an inclusive work environment, and modeling HRW's internal values.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in philanthropy, business, finance, communications/marketing, or related fields, or equivalent work experience in areas such as international relations or social sciences. A minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience with major donors is required, including at least five years in a management role. Candidates should demonstrate success in managing major gift programs, building donor relationships, and soliciting gifts. A strong commitment to human rights and international issues is essential, along with an entrepreneurial mindset, outstanding interpersonal skills, and knowledge of the fundraising environment in France. Experience in event-based fundraising strategy is preferred, and candidates should have excellent communication skills in both French and English.
Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as philanthropy, business, finance, communications/marketing, or equivalent work experience is required. This educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding fundraising principles and practices, as well as the ability to engage effectively with donors and stakeholders.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience, particularly with major and leadership-level donors. Candidates should have at least five years of management experience, demonstrating their ability to lead teams and manage fundraising initiatives effectively. Proven experience in budgeting, revenue tracking, and projections is also necessary, along with a track record of successful donor engagement and solicitation.
Languages: Fluency in both French and English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills in both languages. Strong presentation abilities in both languages are also required. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time position based in Paris, France, with the option to work remotely for part of the week. The salary range for this role is EUR 102,000 – 112,000, and HRW offers comprehensive compensation and benefits, including relocation assistance and immigration support if needed.
