Job Posting Organization:
The Asia Pacific Regional Office (APAC RO) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is responsible for maintaining continuous liaison with the States to which it is accredited and with appropriate international organizations, regional civil aviation bodies, sub-regional bodies, and UN Agencies and programmes. Established to enhance air navigation planning and implementation in the Asia and Pacific region, the APAC RO ensures interregional coordination and promotes the timely and harmonized implementation of ICAO policies, decisions, Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), and air navigation plans. The Regional Sub Office (RSO) at Beijing complements the APAC RO and focuses on capacity building of Air Traffic Management (ATM) capabilities in the region, providing services to 39 APAC States. The RSO monitors current implementations, conducts gap analyses, and updates the implementation status of APAC States.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at the Air Traffic Management and Airspace Organization Management involves working under the supervision of the Regional Officer, Air Traffic Management (ASM/AOM). The intern will be expected to collect and organize information on Direct Routing (DCT) and Free Route Airspace (FRA), including ICAO documents, case studies, and technical references. The intern will assist in summarizing this information into briefing notes or key slides for webinars aimed at the APAC region. Additionally, the intern will manage communication with invited speakers and stakeholders, attend planning meetings, take detailed notes, and draft concise summaries or action items. The role also includes preparing interactive elements for workshops, researching key definitions and benefits of DCT and FRA, creating stakeholder maps, drafting realistic DCT implementation scenarios, and writing post-event reports summarizing key lessons and areas for future focus.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Collecting and organizing information on Direct Routing (DCT) and Free Route Airspace (FRA), including relevant ICAO documents and case studies.
  • Summarizing collected information into short briefing notes or key slides for webinars.
  • Managing communication with invited speakers and industry participants by preparing email briefs, collecting bios, and tracking confirmations.
  • Attending planning meetings, taking detailed notes, and drafting concise summaries or action items.
  • Preparing interactive elements for workshops, such as quizzes, polls, and Q&A prompts to enhance participant engagement.
  • Researching and summarizing key definitions, benefits, and implementation steps of DCT and FRA using ICAO guidance and regional case studies.
  • Creating a stakeholder map of Civil Aviation Authorities, ANSPs, ATC units, and regional groups in the Asia-Pacific region, including their roles and key contacts.
  • Drafting 3-5 realistic DCT implementation scenarios or quiz questions based on webinar presentations.
  • Taking notes during webinars and writing a short post-event report summarizing key lessons and areas for focus.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second-level university degree or higher) in a field related to aviation, airport management, aeronautical/aerospace, computer science, data science, or other engineering disciplines. For candidates from countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, a minimum of four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree is required.

Educational Background:
Candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme in relevant fields such as aviation, airport management, aeronautical/aerospace, computer science, data science, or engineering. For those in systems where education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, at least four years of full-time university studies are necessary.

Experience:
Some experience in airport regulatory authority, airspace management, or engineering is desirable. Experience in preparing case studies, drafting reports, and taking meeting minutes would be an asset for this position.

Languages:
Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential. A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is desirable.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. The duration of the internship is six months, with the possibility of renewal based on requirements. Interns are expected to work five days a week on a full-time basis. During the internship, interns are not eligible for any other form of employment within ICAO and cannot apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or be contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for six months following the end of their internship.
