Job Overview: The Regional Coordinator for the Synthetic Drug Strategy will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the UNODC's Synthetic Drug Strategy across South Asia. This position involves working closely with the Portfolio Management and Outreach team to develop and execute work plans that align with the strategic objectives of the UNODC. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating regional activities, engaging with various stakeholders, and ensuring that the guidance provided in the Synthetic Drug Strategy is effectively implemented. The role requires strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate effectively with government officials, and a commitment to promoting comprehensive responses to the synthetic drug problem. The coordinator will also be expected to produce reports, conduct outreach activities, and support capacity-building initiatives in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Regional Coordinator include: developing work plans for the timely achievement of regional activities; preparing programme progress reports; coordinating the preparation of information materials; engaging with implementing countries to promote the Synthetic Drug Strategy; developing tailored national strategies; representing UNODC in regional activities; briefing national counterparts and donor communities; producing situation analysis and implementation reports; conducting research and analysis; providing support for meetings and conferences; initiating outreach activities; guiding and coordinating the work of other personnel; supporting field missions; coordinating budget-related activities; and analyzing data to identify trends and provide insights for decision-making.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of international drug control and related emerging trends. They should demonstrate professional competence and knowledge of UNODC's policies and procedures. Strong analytical skills, organizational abilities, and interpersonal communication skills are essential. The ability to conduct independent research and analysis, draft reports clearly, and manage conflicting priorities is also required. A commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work is expected.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, social sciences, criminology, management, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in drug control and crime prevention is required. This includes at least three years in project development, management, fundraising, and partnership building. Experience working with counterparts in South Asia is essential, and experience in international or regional organizations is desirable. Familiarity with the development and implementation of national action plans related to drug control is also advantageous, as is experience in data analytics or related areas.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another United Nations official language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's profile.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as a project post and is subject to funding availability. The initial appointment will be for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on the availability of funds and the extension of the mandate.
