Job Overview:
The Medical Officer position involves a range of clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The role is critical in providing medical support to UN personnel in the DRC, particularly in Goma, which is designated as a non-family duty station. The Medical Officer will be responsible for day-to-day clinical operations, including managing a walk-in clinic, handling emergencies, and conducting medical examinations and immunizations. The position also requires participation in occupational health assessments and the organization of training programs for UN staff. The Medical Officer will work closely with military medical units and local healthcare facilities to ensure comprehensive medical care for UN personnel. This role is essential for maintaining the health and safety of staff in a challenging and often dangerous environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Medical Officer will undertake various clinical duties, including managing a walk-in clinic, responding to medical emergencies, conducting pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, and administering travel immunizations. The officer will also address occupational health issues, handle medico-surgical emergencies, and organize training in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid for UN personnel. Administrative responsibilities include liaising with military medical units, managing medical supplies and equipment, and ensuring compliance with UN medical policies. The Medical Officer will supervise the medical facility's operations, ensuring that staff receive appropriate training and support. Additionally, the officer will be expected to mentor and coach national staff and contribute to capacity development within the mission.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a medical degree from a recognized institution and be licensed to practice medicine. They should have a strong understanding of clinical medicine, emergency care, and occupational health. Familiarity with UN medical policies and procedures is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to ethical medical practice. Experience in a conflict or post-conflict environment is an advantage, as is the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.

Educational Background:
A medical degree from an accredited university is required, along with relevant postgraduate training in a medical specialty. Additional certifications in emergency medicine, public health, or occupational health are beneficial. Continuous professional development and training in relevant medical fields are expected to maintain the necessary skills and knowledge for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of clinical experience, preferably in a humanitarian or emergency setting. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in conflict zones, is highly valued. The ability to manage medical emergencies and provide care in resource-limited environments is essential. Previous experience in supervising medical staff and training personnel is also advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English and French is mandatory, as these are the primary working languages of the UN. Knowledge of local languages such as Lingala, Kikongo, Tshiluba, or Swahili is considered an asset, as it facilitates communication with local staff and communities.

This position is a non-family assignment based in Goma, with a contract duration until 30 June 2026, pending budget confirmation. The role requires the ability to adapt to challenging living conditions, including limited access to amenities and potential security risks.
