The UN RCO in Morocco is part of this global network, working to facilitate sustainable development initiatives in the country.

Job Overview:
The Economist position is located within the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Rabat, Morocco. The role is pivotal in supporting the UN's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to facilitate socio-economic transformation in the country. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting evidence-based analysis of the status of the SDGs, providing substantive advice to the Resident Coordinator (RC) and the UN Country Team (UNCT) on issues related to SDG acceleration, socio-economic transformation, and SDG financing. This includes researching and analyzing best practices, guiding policy support, and coordinating the development of integrated SDG programming cycles. The position requires a strong understanding of sustainable development theories and the ability to apply them in a practical context, ensuring that the UN's initiatives are effective and aligned with national development priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Planning, facilitating, and consolidating evidence-based analysis of the SDGs, providing advice on SDG acceleration and socio-economic transformation.
  • Supporting advocacy efforts for partnerships with national counterparts and international financial institutions to reframe economic policies around SDG acceleration.
  • Coordinating the development of an integrated SDG programming cycle, including the preparation of Common Country Analyses and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.
  • Planning and directing knowledge generation and management around SDG acceleration and financing, promoting collaboration and sharing of best practices.
  • Conducting data collection and analysis to inform decision-making and policy development.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to foster partnerships and collaboration on SDG-related initiatives.
  • Monitoring regional and global socio-economic trends and their implications for SDG acceleration at the country level.
  • Supporting UNCT initiatives to advance SDG financing and providing economic analysis for cross-pillar approaches.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, development studies, public policy, public finance, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of sustainable development policies and practices, particularly in the context of the SDGs and development cooperation.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as economics, development studies, public policy, or public finance. A first-level university degree may be accepted if accompanied by additional qualifying experience. Completion of programs in data analytics or related areas is advantageous, indicating a strong foundation in analytical skills necessary for the role.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, socio-economic research, and analysis is required. Candidates should have experience in development economics at the national or international level, with a strong understanding of the SDGs and their application in a national context. Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder processes and participatory assessments is desirable, as is familiarity with SDG financing mechanisms. Proven analytical, writing, and presentation skills are essential for conveying complex ideas clearly and effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English and French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication. Working knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable, and knowledge of another official UN language is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), while knowledge is rated as 'confident' in two of the four areas.
