Job Overview:
The (Senior) Environmental/Social Development SpecialistOccupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a pivotal role within the Sustainability and Fiduciary Solutions Department (SFD) of AIIB. This position is responsible for integrating environmental and social dimensions, particularly occupational health and safety, into AIIB's operations. The specialist will engage in various activities, including evaluating environmental and social sustainability of investment programs, managing associated risks, and ensuring compliance with AIIB's Environmental and Social Policy (ESP). The role requires collaboration with project teams and clients to address OHS risks, conduct assessments, and develop management plans that align with international best practices. The specialist will also contribute to knowledge management and capacity building within the organization, ensuring that AIIB's projects meet high standards of environmental and social governance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the (Senior) Environmental/Social Development Specialist – OHS include:
  • Operational Support: Participate in the identification, appraisal, design, and implementation of investment programs and projects to evaluate environmental and social sustainability. Manage environmental and social risks associated with investment projects, including Sovereign-backed and Non-sovereign-backed Financings. Conduct due diligence assessments of environmental and social aspects, including field visits as necessary. Guide clients in preparing and implementing environmental and social impact assessments (ESIAs) and management plans. Monitor implementation of environmental and social aspects during project execution and address compliance issues.
  • Knowledge Management and Capacity Building: Contribute to AIIB’s knowledge base on environmental and social aspects, particularly related to OHS. Develop and conduct training on environmental and social sustainability for AIIB staff and clients.
  • Occupational Health and Safety: Act as the OHS Focal Point and Expert within SFD. Advise project teams on planning and managing OHS risks and participate in monitoring OHS performance across the portfolio.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the (Senior) Environmental/Social Development Specialist – OHS position must possess the following qualifications: Proven ability to manage complex tasks within multi-disciplinary teams. Capacity to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with clients and stakeholders. Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in relevant fields such as occupational health, environmental science, or social science. Minimum of 5-8 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social due diligence, particularly in the context of multilateral development banks or similar organizations. Expertise in occupational health and safety, hazard identification, and emergency preparedness. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with knowledge of local languages being an advantage.

Educational Background:
An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in occupational health, industrial safety, environmental science, social science, engineering, planning, community development, law, or a related discipline is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively manage environmental and social risks associated with infrastructure projects.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5-8 years of relevant professional experience. This experience should include working on environmental and social due diligence, environmental planning, and management, preferably in a multilateral development bank or as a consultant to such organizations. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in managing occupational health and safety aspects of infrastructure projects, including conducting assessments and audits, and developing and implementing relevant strategies and policies.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of the local language(s) of the countries where AIIB invests would be considered an advantage, as it would facilitate communication with local stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of project implementation.
