Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld globally, providing a platform for dialogue between governments, employers, and workers. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce committed to improving working conditions and promoting decent work for all. The ILO emphasizes diversity within its staff and encourages applications from qualified individuals, including women, persons with disabilities, and those from underrepresented countries.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides talented individuals with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of international labor issues by directly participating in the work of the ILO and applying its principles, programs, and strategies. Interns will gain practical experience related to their field of study, although the program does not aim to lead to a career at the ILO, and there is no expectation of employment at the end of the internship. Interns will be involved in various aspects of program management, including planning, monitoring, and evaluation, and will have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects, enhancing their understanding of international labor challenges. The internship is designed to foster professional growth, networking opportunities, and exploration of career paths in international development and labor standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will support the ILO's Country Office in Abidjan, which covers six countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, Mali, and Togo. Responsibilities include assisting in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of ILO activities in these countries. Interns will contribute to resource programming, ensuring alignment with results-based management principles, and will engage in the preparation and review of country programs for decent work. They will also be involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support evidence-based decision-making. Additionally, interns will help create monitoring and evaluation frameworks, track project progress, and assess outcomes to measure impact. Administrative tasks will also be part of the role, accounting for 10-20% of the intern's time.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be enrolled in their final year of a graduate program or have completed such a program within the last year. Relevant professional experience and knowledge of computer applications are advantageous, particularly familiarity with data analysis software and research methodologies. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Candidates should demonstrate cultural sensitivity and an understanding of gender equality issues.
Educational Background: A background in Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, or Business Administration is required. Candidates should be in their final year of graduate studies or have recently completed their degree, ensuring they have the necessary theoretical foundation to engage with the ILO's work effectively.
Experience: Relevant professional experience is preferred, particularly in areas related to project management, data analysis, or research. Familiarity with data analysis software and experience in conducting research will be considered an asset, enhancing the intern's ability to contribute meaningfully to the ILO's projects.
Languages: Fluency in French, both written and spoken, is mandatory. A good command of English is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication within the international context of the ILO's work.
Additional Notes: The internship is for a duration of three months, with the possibility of renewal, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly allowance based on the cost of living in Abidjan, unless they are funded by another institution. Travel expenses to the internship location will be the intern's responsibility. The ILO does not cover any medical or accident-related expenses during the internship, and candidates are advised to ensure they have appropriate health insurance coverage. The ILO does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and warns against fraudulent communications.
