Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor standards globally. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor rights are respected and that all individuals have access to decent work. The organization operates in over 180 countries and employs approximately 3,300 staff members. The ILO is known for its commitment to promoting social dialogue between governments, employers, and workers, and it plays a crucial role in setting international labor standards and policies.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience in an international organization while contributing to the organization's mission of promoting decent work and social justice. Interns will engage directly in the work of the ILO, participating in various research and communication activities that align with their field of study. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of international labor issues and provide hands-on experience in a professional setting. Interns will work closely with different departments and may be involved in producing multimedia content, managing social media, and assisting in research projects. This position is ideal for candidates looking to deepen their knowledge of labor issues and gain valuable skills in a dynamic and multicultural environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting in the production of engaging multimedia content such as podcasts, infographics, videos, newsletters, and blogs; coordinating with other ILO units and offices on joint initiatives; producing regular content for social media platforms; supporting the department's communication strategies for various products; working closely with the communications team to promote flagship publications; assisting in the organization of events, including logistics and online dissemination; curating and updating content on the ILO's official global website; and dedicating a portion of their time to administrative tasks such as managing communication schedules and coordinating outreach efforts. Interns will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of creative strategies and messaging for upcoming departmental products.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and should be enrolled in or have completed a master's or doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Additionally, candidates should possess strong communication skills, adaptability to an international and multicultural environment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. Basic knowledge of social media analytics, digital publishing formats, and experience in organizing events or webinars are considered beneficial.
Educational Background: Candidates should be enrolled in or have recently completed a degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field. The educational background should be relevant to the tasks they will be performing during the internship, ensuring that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to the ILO's work.
Experience: Previous experience in content creation, social media management, or multimedia production is valued. Familiarity with tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva, or similar software is preferred, as these skills will enhance the intern's ability to produce high-quality content for the ILO's communication efforts. Interns should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and contribute to the organization's objectives.
Languages: Proficiency in English is required, both spoken and written. Knowledge of another official ILO language, such as French or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application. The ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages is beneficial in the diverse environment of the ILO.
Additional Notes: The internship contract will last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution, in which case the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the stipend remains at 2450 CHF. Additionally, interns will receive a contribution of 45 CHF per month towards medical insurance expenses during the internship period. Candidates from underrepresented or insufficiently represented member states may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any personal expenses incurred during the internship, and candidates are responsible for obtaining their own health and accident insurance. The ILO does not charge any fees during the application process and advises candidates to be cautious of fraudulent communications.
