Job Overview: The UNV Communication Specialist will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and communication of the Climate Action Pathways for Island Transport (CAP-IT) project, which aims to accelerate the decarbonization of Samoa's land and maritime transport sectors. This position requires strategic communication skills to effectively promote the project and its benefits, particularly in relation to low-carbon development. The specialist will work closely with the CAP-IT Project Manager and the MCO’s Communications Analyst to ensure that project-related information is disseminated effectively to both national and international audiences. The role involves producing public relations materials, coordinating media coverage, organizing public events, and managing social media content to raise awareness about the project and its objectives. Additionally, the specialist will support the MCO's communication efforts and contribute to knowledge sharing and management within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UNV Communication Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Producing public relations materials for internal and external promotion of the project, including press releases and promotional content.
Coordinating media presence and coverage during project-related events and milestones.
Organizing public events to enhance project visibility and understanding.
Ensuring systematic recognition of donor support and partner involvement.
Utilizing traditional media and social networks to share project information and advocate for low-carbon development.
Overseeing awareness campaigns to maximize advocacy impact.
Managing content for the CAP-IT and UNDP MCO websites and newsletters.
Creating and managing social media content, including blogs and articles.
Supporting the production of promotional videos and human stories from project beneficiaries. 1
Providing inputs for narrative and annual reports from a communications perspective. 1
Supporting the implementation of the MCO’s Partnership and Communications Strategy. 1
Coordinating MCO events, publications, and web activities. 1
Identifying and synthesizing best practices and lessons learned related to program goals. 1
Providing training and advice to UNDP staff on communications for development.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports. A demonstrated understanding of UNDP operations and procedures is essential, along with technical capabilities relevant to communications. Candidates should exhibit discretion, political sensitivity, and the ability to liaise with various stakeholders. A commitment to gender equality and diversity is crucial, as is the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Candidates should also demonstrate professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills are necessary to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in these areas will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of communication strategies and tools, particularly in the context of development work.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of development or environmental projects, is highly desirable. Familiarity with social media management and content creation is essential, as well as experience in organizing events and managing media relations.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Samoan or other Pacific languages is considered an asset, as it will enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position offers a Monthly Living Allowance of WST 2244.74, an Entry Lump Sum of USD 400, and medical and life insurance coverage. Leave entitlements include annual leave, sick leave, and learning leave. The Exit Lump Sum is WST 187.06 for each month served, paid upon completion of the contract. The living environment in Apia, Samoa, is safe and peaceful, providing a vibrant atmosphere for both work and leisure.
