Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO offers a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in international labor issues. Interns will engage directly with the work of the ILO and contribute to the implementation of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of relevant international issues while providing hands-on experience related to the intern's field of study. Interns will be involved in various tasks that support the Better Work program, which aims to improve working conditions and promote inclusive economic growth, particularly in the garment sector. This role will provide exposure to resource mobilization, donor engagement, and design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design and monitoring.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be expected to support the Better Work Global team in various capacities, including but not limited to: creating informational notes, articles, and communication documents that articulate Better Work's approaches and their application in practice at the country level; conducting background research on foundations and other partners to support resource mobilization efforts; analyzing and reviewing policies and initiatives of Better Work's development partners related to trade, development cooperation, responsible business conduct, labor standards, working conditions, and social justice; developing and implementing communication strategies and events to enhance collaboration and dialogue with government agencies, employer organizations, worker organizations, and private sector partners. Interns should anticipate dedicating 10 to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following qualifications: no close relatives working at the ILO; not having previously interned at the ILO; currently enrolled in or having completed a Master's or Doctoral program within the past year; and possessing practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, which is mandatory. Additionally, strong communication skills, a willingness to learn, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adaptability to a multicultural and multilingual environment are essential.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a Master's degree in business administration, economics, public policy, international development, social policy, or a related field in social sciences, with a focus on multilateralism and development. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Master's program or have completed such a program within the last year to be eligible for the internship.
Experience: While prior experience is not mandatory, having experience in multi-stakeholder engagement, donor relations, strategic partnership development, results-based management, or external relations would be advantageous. This experience can enhance the candidate's ability to contribute effectively to the Better Work program and its objectives.
Languages: A strong command of English is required for this position, both written and spoken. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The internship contract duration is between 3 to 6 months, starting on the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution. If partial funding is received, the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the intern receives the full stipend. Additionally, interns will receive a monthly contribution of 45 CHF towards medical insurance costs during the internship. Candidates from underrepresented member states may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any costs related to accidents or illnesses during the internship, and candidates must ensure they have adequate health and accident insurance coverage. The ILO does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and advises candidates to be cautious of fraudulent communications.
