Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) was established in 1919 and has been responding to conflicts and disasters since its inception. The ILO aims to promote stability and social justice through decent work for all. It operates globally, with a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld and that employment opportunities are available to all, particularly in regions affected by crises. The organization values diversity and encourages applications from qualified candidates, including those with disabilities and individuals from underrepresented member states.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for candidates to deepen their understanding of international issues by directly participating in the work of the Office and implementing the principles, programs, and strategies of the ILO. Interns will gain practical experience related to their field of study while contributing to the ILO's mission. The internship is part of a generic roster that is published biannually, allowing various departments and field offices to select and contact suitable candidates directly. Interns are expected to engage in various tasks that support the ILO's work in crisis situations, particularly in the context of humanitarian, development, and peace nexus (HDPN).
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will work under the supervision of the Chief Technical Advisor of the Nexus, focusing on enhancing the ILO's capabilities in the HDPN. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of workshops and events related to Decent Work in crisis situations, organizing key regional and international events, and supporting global, regional, and national awareness initiatives regarding the implications of ILO Recommendation No. 20
Interns will also contribute to documenting lessons learned and best practices from ILO initiatives in fragile and conflict-affected areas, maintaining electronic records, and developing training materials and guidelines for tripartite constituents on HDPN.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and must be enrolled in or have completed a master's or doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English (both oral and written) is mandatory. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate adaptability to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment, possess good communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a team.
Educational Background: Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a postgraduate program (master's or higher) in disciplines such as disaster/climate and environmental studies, international relations, development studies, gender studies/human rights, social sciences, or political science. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of the ILO's work in crisis situations.
Experience: While prior experience is not mandatory, initial field experiences in developing countries, particularly in fragile and post-conflict settings, will be valued. This experience can enhance the candidate's understanding of the challenges faced in these environments and the ILO's role in addressing them.
Languages: Excellent command of English (oral and written) is required. Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is considered an asset, as it can facilitate communication within the diverse international context of the ILO.
Additional Notes: The internship contract duration is between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they receive funding from another institution. Additionally, a contribution of 45 CHF per month will be provided to cover medical insurance expenses during the internship. Candidates from underrepresented member states may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any personal expenses incurred during the internship and candidates are required to have personal health and accident insurance valid throughout the internship period. The ILO does not charge any fees during the application process and candidates should be cautious of fraudulent communications.
