Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection, and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce of approximately 3,300 employees. The ILO is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, ensuring that all individuals, including those with disabilities, have equal opportunities.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of labor law and governance. Interns will engage directly in the work of the ILO, contributing to the implementation of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of international labor issues while providing hands-on experience related to the intern's field of study. Interns will be involved in various projects, including research, data collection, and analysis, and will work closely with specialists in labor law and access to justice.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be expected to contribute to the development of recommendations for tripartite constituents (governments, employers, and workers) regarding labor legislation and access to justice. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing comparative data on labor legislation and practices, assisting in providing technical advice on labor law reforms, contributing to research on labor dispute resolution systems, and participating in the publication of research findings. Interns will also be involved in updating databases and producing publications, as well as performing other relevant tasks as needed. It is anticipated that interns will dedicate 10-20% of their time to administrative tasks.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong academic background in law, with a bachelor's degree in law being essential. A specialization in comparative labor law is highly advantageous, as is training in other social sciences. Candidates should be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program or have completed such a program within the past year. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English, both oral and written, as this is a mandatory requirement for the internship.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this internship include a bachelor's degree in law, with a preference for candidates who have specialized in labor law or related fields. Candidates must also be enrolled in a master's program or have completed their studies within the last year, ensuring that they are up-to-date with current academic standards and practices in the field of labor law.
Experience: Candidates should have demonstrated experience in conducting comparative legal research, preferably in the area of labor law. Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods is valued, as well as experience in developing and maintaining a synthetic database. Proficiency in standard MS Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is also required to effectively perform the tasks associated with the internship.
Languages: Full working proficiency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of at least one of the ILO's working languages (French, Spanish) or another language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate and collaborate in a multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: The internship contract duration is between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they receive funding from another institution. If partial funding is received, the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the intern receives the full stipend. Additionally, interns will receive a monthly contribution of 45 CHF towards medical insurance costs. Candidates from underrepresented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any personal expenses incurred during the internship, and candidates must secure their own health and accident insurance for the duration of their internship.
