Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices worldwide. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld and that workers' rights are protected. The organization operates in over 180 countries and employs approximately 3,300 staff members. The ILO is committed to promoting decent work for all, which includes the right to work, the right to fair wages, and the right to safe working conditions. The organization values diversity and inclusion, actively encouraging applications from qualified candidates, including those with disabilities and individuals from underrepresented member states.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for candidates to gain a deeper understanding of international labor issues by directly participating in the work of the organization. Interns will engage in the application of ILO principles, programs, and strategies, acquiring practical experience that is closely related to their field of study. The internship is designed to enhance the intern's knowledge and skills while contributing to the ILO's mission of promoting social justice and decent work. Interns will be involved in various projects and initiatives, particularly in the area of information technology and data management, which are crucial for the ILO's operations. The internship duration ranges from 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month, and is part of a generic internship roster that is published biannually. Candidates will be selected by various departments and field offices based on their qualifications and suitability for specific roles.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns in the ILO's INFOTEC department will be involved in a range of activities that support the organization's digital transformation efforts. Responsibilities include:
Developing AI use cases: Identifying and drafting AI use cases tailored to different business units, exploring how AI can optimize daily workflows and enhance productivity.
Data analysis and reporting: Assisting in the extraction, transformation, and visualization of data to support evidence-based decision-making. This includes working with dashboards, reporting tools, and business intelligence platforms to make complex data accessible and actionable.
AI-assisted coding and automation: Exploring AI-enhanced programming tools to support software development and business automation. Assisting in the development of prototypes that integrate AI into coding, collaboration, and workflow automation.
AI in communication and collaboration: Researching and testing AI tools that enhance workplace communication, document processing, and knowledge-sharing platforms.
Business process optimization: Engaging with business units to understand operational challenges and exploring AI-driven solutions to improve efficiency. Interns will work closely with IT specialists, data analysts, and business application teams, gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic and innovative environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet several qualifications to be eligible for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and should be enrolled in or have completed a master's or doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a critical thinking mindset. The ability to communicate complex AI and data concepts clearly and practically is essential. A team-oriented mentality and the capability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders are also important.
Educational Background: Candidates should be enrolled in or have recently completed a master's program in fields such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, business analytics, information technology, or a related technical field. Candidates with backgrounds in engineering or business administration with a strong focus on data, AI, or digital transformation will also be considered. This educational background is crucial as it aligns with the responsibilities and projects that interns will undertake during their time at the ILO.
Experience: While prior experience is not strictly required, it is highly desirable for candidates to have completed relevant coursework or possess practical experience in areas such as AI, machine learning, automation, or data analysis. Familiarity with AI applications in business processes, including workflow automation, knowledge management, or digital collaboration, is advantageous. Experience in coding and scripting languages such as Python, R, SQL, or JavaScript is beneficial. Understanding cloud-based AI services, open-source AI frameworks, or chatbot development will also be considered a plus, as these skills will enhance the intern's ability to contribute effectively to the team.
Languages: A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this internship. Additionally, proficiency in at least one of the ILO's official languages (French or Spanish) is considered an advantage. Given that all ILO systems and data are in English, fluency in English is highly desirable to ensure effective communication and collaboration within the organization.
Additional Notes: The internship is a full-time position with a contract duration of 3 to 6 months. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they receive funding from another institution, in which case the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the stipend remains at 2450 CHF. Additionally, interns will receive a contribution of 45 CHF per month towards medical insurance expenses during the internship period. Candidates from underrepresented or insufficiently represented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any expenses incurred during the internship due to accidents or illness, and interns are required to obtain personal health and accident insurance valid throughout their internship. The ILO does not charge any fees during the application process and advises candidates to be cautious of fraudulent communications.
