Job Overview: The position of Intern at UN Women involves supporting the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) secretariat in implementing a women's leadership project. The intern will work under the supervision of Fatou Sombie and Lister Chapeta, reporting to the AWLN Policy Analyst. The role includes assisting with the preparation of the AWLN IGR, engaging with stakeholders, drafting materials, and supporting various logistical and administrative tasks. The intern will gain valuable experience in the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, gender equality principles, and the operational aspects of UN Women and the African Union's initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for supporting the preparation of the AWLN IGR, which includes planning and scheduling meetings, engaging with the AWLN youth caucus and relevant stakeholders, preparing background information for resource mobilization initiatives, drafting IGR materials, and assisting in procurement processes. Additional responsibilities include liaising with interpreters and conference team members, preparing reports for coordination meetings, drafting the IGR roadmap, organizing workshops and events, and facilitating the sharing of best practices among youth members and chapters. The intern may also be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess a strong understanding of international development or peace and security, particularly in relation to the African Union's mission and its partnership with the United Nations. The ability to think logically, pay attention to detail, conduct research, and write clearly and concisely is essential. The intern should demonstrate sound judgment, the ability to work harmoniously with diverse staff, and the capacity to work independently under tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment. Excellent communication skills and proficiency in graphic design applications, Microsoft SharePoint, and HTML are considered a plus.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should be pursuing or have completed a degree in international relations, gender studies, development studies, or a related field. A strong academic background in gender equality and women's empowerment principles is highly desirable, as well as familiarity with the UN system and its operations.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships or volunteer work in international development, gender equality, or peace and security will be advantageous. The intern should demonstrate a commitment to the principles of gender equality and women's empowerment, as well as an understanding of the challenges faced by women in leadership roles.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, would be considered an asset. The ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders is crucial for this role.
