The UN operates in various countries around the world, with a significant presence in conflict zones and areas requiring humanitarian assistance. The organization employs thousands of individuals, including staff and interns, who contribute to its diverse programs and initiatives.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNIC-Beirut offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience in media and communications within the framework of the United Nations. Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and/or Public Information Officer (PIO), engaging in a variety of tasks that will enhance their understanding of the UN's operations and media strategies. The role is designed to provide interns with hands-on experience in drafting media materials, contributing to digital content, and supporting public relations events. The internship is expected to last between 2 to 6 months, providing a comprehensive exposure to the workings of the UN and its communication efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks that may vary based on their background and the specific needs of the office. Key responsibilities include:
  • Drafting media advisories, press releases, and news stories in both English and Arabic.
  • Contributing to the content creation for the UNIC-Beirut website and social media platforms, ensuring timely updates on relevant UN news and events.
  • Providing media support for events and campaigns organized by UNIC-Beirut, including assisting in the organization of press conferences and briefings.
  • Taking photos and videos for media coverage and archiving purposes.
  • Assisting with other ad-hoc activities as directed by supervisors, which may include research and administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Interns should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Additionally, the ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable, as is the capability to design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. This educational background ensures that interns possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills relevant to the tasks they will undertake during their internship.

Experience:
The internship does not require prior professional work experience, making it an ideal opportunity for students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in a professional setting. However, candidates should have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and its mission, as well as the ability to engage with diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required for this internship, as these are the primary languages used in the UN's communications. Knowledge of French is considered desirable, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations, which may enhance the intern's ability to engage with a broader range of UN materials and communications.

Additional Notes:
Interns at the United Nations are not financially compensated for their work. All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Lebanon may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer. Additionally, the UN emphasizes that it does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
