Job Posting Organization:
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is a regional commission of the United Nations established to support economic and social development in its 22 Arab member States. Job Overview:
The Individual Contractor position is designed to provide timely and high-quality statistical and analytical support to ESCWA projects, particularly in the context of the Governorate Competitiveness Index (GCI) initiative in Oman. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that all work meets ESCWA's standards for accuracy, clarity, and relevance. The role involves contributing to the release of ESCWA reports and technical outputs, with performance evaluated based on the timely completion of tasks, the quality of data collection and analysis, and effective communication with team members. The position is expected to last for six months and will involve working closely with the Project Coordinator to support various analytical and research activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Individual Contractor include:
  • Data Processing: Supporting the validation, cleaning, and organization of datasets; maintaining and updating indicator databases; processing quantitative and qualitative data using analytical software.
  • Research and Statistical Analysis: Conducting statistical analysis to identify trends; assisting in interpreting results and preparing visual outputs such as graphs and dashboards.
  • Knowledge Product Development: Assisting in drafting technical materials, policy briefs, and reports.
  • Coordination and Support: Supporting the organization of meetings and consultations; coordinating with team members to ensure coherence and accuracy of outputs; performing other related tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field. All applicants are required to submit a copy of their educational degree, and incomplete applications will not be considered. While no previous work experience is required for this position, exposure to governance monitoring tools or indices, as well as familiarity with data visualization software or statistical packages, is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a basic understanding of data analysis or statistics.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a first-level university degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field. This foundational education is essential for performing the statistical and analytical tasks associated with the role, ensuring that the incumbent has the necessary skills to contribute effectively to ESCWA's projects.

Experience:
For this position, no prior work experience is required. However, candidates with exposure to indices or governance monitoring tools, as well as familiarity with data visualization software or statistical packages, will be viewed favorably. This indicates that while the role is open to recent graduates or those new to the field, having some relevant exposure can enhance a candidate's application.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the working languages at ESCWA. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all four areas of language use: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. While French is also a working language of the United Nations Secretariat, fluency in Arabic and English is mandatory for this role.
