Job Overview: The Individual Contractor (IC) will work under the direct supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer (Gender Economist) and will be responsible for providing analytical and research support for a study focused on how digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping employment in the Arab region, particularly for young women. The IC will assist in compiling and processing data sets from various sources, conduct statistical analysis, and contribute to stakeholder engagements. The role requires a strong understanding of gender issues in the labor market and the ability to analyze trends and skills gaps. The IC will also support the drafting of analytical sections for the study and assist with other related tasks as requested by the supervisor. All deliverables must be submitted in English, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and analytical skills in this role.
Duties and Responsibilities: The IC will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
Compiling, processing, and wrangling data sets derived from sources such as Labour Force Surveys and Labour Market Panel Surveys.
Conducting statistical and data analysis to explore skills profiling and highlight trends and gaps in the labor market.
Conducting background research and reviewing relevant materials to support the study.
Contributing to stakeholder engagements and expert interviews as requested.
Drafting analytical sections for the study, ensuring that the findings are clearly articulated and supported by data.
Assisting in other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to support the team in various capacities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in economics, labour economics, development studies, data science, or related fields. A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in applied quantitative research is required. Proficiency in STATA is essential, along with strong skills in microdata management and statistical/econometric analysis. Knowledge of R or Python is desirable, as is experience in labor market and gender issues. Familiarity with combining qualitative insights with data-driven evidence will be an advantage. Candidates must submit a copy of their educational degree, as incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in relevant fields such as economics, labour economics, development studies, or data science is required for this position. Experience: A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in applied quantitative research is required. Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is the primary working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, given that it is a working language of ESCWA. Candidates should be able to demonstrate fluency in all four areas of language proficiency: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the United Nations.
