Job Posting Organization: The Education Outreach Section (EOS) is part of the Outreach Division (OD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) at the United Nations. The EOS is dedicated to producing communications materials and organizing educational events that foster long-term support for various mandated programs of the United Nations, including the Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, the Outreach Programme on the Holocaust, and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative. The section collaborates with institutions of higher education and engages students globally through Model United Nations simulations, promoting understanding of UN principles and goals. The EOS also organizes events commemorating significant international days, such as the International Day of Peace. The organization aims to enhance awareness and education regarding critical global issues through outreach and engagement.
Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position within the Education Outreach Section (EOS) is designed to provide support to the EOS team in various capacities. Interns will engage in in-depth research on thematic issues relevant to the UN's outreach programs, draft background materials, and assist in the preparation of official documents, website content, and social media communications. The role also includes logistical support for educational events, scheduling, and other administrative tasks as assigned. Interns will work under the supervision of a UN staff member at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The internship is structured to last a minimum of four months, with the possibility of extension up to six months, and can be conducted either full-time or part-time, depending on the intern's availability. The expected start date for this internship is May 27, 2025, and it is important to note that this is an unpaid position.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the daily operations of the Education Outreach Section. Key responsibilities include conducting internet research on thematic issues, monitoring program inboxes, providing logistical support for in-person events, assisting in the planning and organization of events (including researching speakers and preparing promotional materials), maintaining databases for the EOS section, and providing general office support such as drafting correspondence, organizing meetings, and maintaining files and records. Interns may also be assigned other ad hoc tasks as necessary. The role requires effective communication, teamwork, and client orientation skills, as interns will be expected to collaborate with colleagues and engage with various stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, or a related area. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Additionally, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Strong writing skills, social media proficiency, and multimedia production experience are highly desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates should be students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. The educational background should align with the internship's focus areas, emphasizing communication, media, or international relations.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is desirable.
