Job Overview:
The Radiation and Environmental Protection Specialist is a pivotal role within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, specifically in the Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety. This position involves contributing specialized technical knowledge to the planning and implementation of the unit's work programme, particularly in relation to the development and application of safety standards aimed at protecting the public and the environment from radioactive releases. The specialist will act as a technical expert, adviser, and analyst, coordinating activities and providing authoritative information to Member States. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of radiation protection standards and their implementation, as well as collaboration with international stakeholders to enhance safety measures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Radiation and Environmental Protection Specialist include facilitating the development of international safety standards and guidance material, providing technical expertise for the application of these standards through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, and planning and coordinating international projects. The specialist will assist Member States by transferring technical knowledge on environmental protection from radioactive releases, contribute to capacity-building activities by developing training materials and organizing training events, and communicate results of activities to a broader audience. Additionally, the role involves building and maintaining strategic partnerships with various stakeholders to promote the application of safety standards, and the incumbent may be required to work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials, necessitating medical clearance and adherence to health monitoring protocols.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, or a related field, with a Master's Degree being preferred. A minimum of seven years of experience in radiation protection for the public and the environment is required, including at least three years focused on radiological environmental impact assessment. Knowledge of environmental protection in a radiation context is essential, along with excellent oral and written command of English. Familiarity with other official IAEA languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as chemistry, physics, or environmental sciences. An advanced university degree (Master's) is preferred, and candidates with a Bachelor's degree may be considered if they have two additional years of relevant experience. The educational qualifications should align with the technical demands of the role, particularly in radiation protection and environmental safety.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of professional experience in the field of radiation protection, specifically concerning the public and environmental safety. At least three of those years should involve direct work with radiological environmental impact assessments. Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in the practical application of radiation safety standards and the ability to engage in international advisory missions related to safety assessments.

Languages:

The IAEA offers a competitive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84,672, along with a variable post adjustment, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, and relocation expenses.
