Job Overview:
The Driver position at IOM involves a range of responsibilities centered around driving and logistics support. The successful candidate will be tasked with operating vehicles assigned to senior officials, managing transportation schedules, and ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the vehicles. This role is crucial for facilitating the movement of IOM personnel and ensuring that all transportation activities adhere to IOM's rules and regulations. The driver will also be responsible for keeping detailed records of vehicle usage and maintenance, as well as assisting with clerical duties when necessary. The position requires a high level of confidentiality and discretion, especially when dealing with sensitive information related to IOM operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Driver include:
  • Driving the assigned vehicle(s) for the Chief of Mission/Head of Office/Regional Director.
  • Organizing and monitoring transportation schedules for other drivers in the unit/office/duty station.
  • Conducting daily maintenance checks on the assigned vehicle(s) to ensure roadworthiness, including checking tires, brakes, engine oil, and fan belts.
  • Arranging for minor repairs and ensuring the vehicles are kept clean.
  • Keeping records of spare parts for the vehicle(s) and conducting monthly inventories.
  • Finding the most direct and safe routes to destinations.
  • Ensuring that IOM vehicles are used only for official business as directed by the supervisor.
  • Preparing daily log sheets and monthly reports summarizing vehicle statistics such as mileage and fuel consumption.
  • Meeting official personnel at airports and facilitating immigration and customs formalities. 1
  • Collecting and delivering mail, documents, and other communications/items as required. 1
  • Assisting country office staff with clerical duties such as making phone calls and photocopying. 1
  • Briefing and training other drivers on their duties and responsibilities. 1
  • Performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Driver position include:
  • A high school degree/certificate with a minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree with at least 1 year of relevant working experience from an accredited institution.
  • A valid national driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
  • Experience in driving various makes and models of vehicles.
  • Skills in minor vehicle repairs.
  • Proficiency in using radio, email, telephone, and other applications.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and in challenging settings.
  • Ability to work in multicultural and multi-ethnic environments. 1
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. 1
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain integrity in performing assigned responsibilities.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate, or a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. The educational background should be complemented by relevant work experience, as specified in the qualifications.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience if they hold a high school degree/certificate, or at least 1 year of relevant experience if they possess a Bachelor’s Degree. Experience should include knowledge of driving rules and regulations, as well as practical experience in driving a variety of vehicles. Skills in minor vehicle repairs are also essential.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is required, both oral and written. IOM’s official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages may be evaluated during the selection process, which could include written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The position is subject to local recruitment, meaning only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Nigeria will be considered. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, visa, and necessary government authorizations.
