The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) was established in December 1999 and serves as the designated focal point within the United Nations system for coordinating efforts to reduce disaster risks. The organization aims to ensure synergies among disaster reduction activities across the United Nations and regional organizations, addressing both developed and less developed countries. UNDRR is led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG) and has a workforce of over 150 staff members based in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as in various regional offices. The organization plays a crucial role in guiding, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supporting regional and national efforts to reduce disaster risks, and raising global awareness through collaboration with UN Member States, civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is based in the UNDRR Office in Bangkok and is designed for a duration of up to 6 months. This is a full-time, unpaid internship requiring interns to work five days a week, totaling 40 hours. Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Information Design & Technology Solutions (IDTS) unit, which is part of the Communication, Advocacy, Knowledge Management, and ICT Section of UNDRR. The role is focused on assisting in the design and prototyping of user interfaces for various ongoing projects, including Damage and Losses systems, Knowledge Hubs, and the unified Data Hub. Interns will also conduct user research to enhance the usability and accessibility of digital platforms, develop wireframes and prototypes, and collaborate with developers and stakeholders to ensure that UX/UI improvements align with functional and technical requirements. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in UX design and contribute to meaningful projects that support disaster risk reduction efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the intern will vary based on their background and the specific period of the internship. Indicative responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the design and prototyping of user interfaces for ongoing projects, such as Damage and Losses systems, Knowledge Hubs, and the unified Data Hub.
  • Conducting user research through surveys, interviews, and usability testing to enhance the usability and accessibility of digital platforms.
  • Developing and refining wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes to visualize and test UI/UX concepts.
  • Supporting the creation and maintenance of design systems, UI components, and style guides to ensure consistency across platforms.
  • Collaborating with developers, data teams, and stakeholders to align UX/UI improvements with functional and technical requirements.
  • Documenting design processes, research insights, and usability findings to contribute to iterative improvements.
  • Performing additional duties as required by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Candidates must be pursuing or have pursued their degree in areas related to this job opening. Additionally, candidates should possess proficiency in user research methods, interaction design principles, information architecture, high- and low-fidelity prototyping and wireframing, usability evaluation, and a demonstrated interest in designing conversational flows for human-AI interactions. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential, along with a commitment to the values of the United Nations.

Educational Background:

A field of study closely related to the internship is required, and applicants may be asked to provide a portfolio of relevant coursework to demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

Experience:
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, it is essential that their field of study is closely related to the type of internship they are applying for. This means that while prior work experience is not mandatory, relevant academic experience or coursework is necessary to qualify for the position.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language within the organization. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English remains the primary requirement for effective communication in this role.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, including application, interview, or training. The organization also does not request information regarding applicants' bank accounts.
