  • The mission's primary objectives include protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, and supporting the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement. UNMISS operates with a mandate that emphasizes the importance of building durable peace and supporting inclusive governance. The mission is composed of a diverse team of personnel, including military, police, and civilian staff, working collaboratively to achieve its goals. The mission is currently authorized to maintain a ceiling of 17,000 troops and 2,101 police officers, including corrections officers, to fulfill its mandate effectively. Job Overview:
The Radio Producer will play a crucial role in the Communications and Public Information Section (CPIS) of UNMISS, specifically within the Radio Unit. This position involves leading a team responsible for designing and producing daily radio programs for Radio Miraya, which serves as a vital platform for disseminating information and fostering dialogue among communities in South Sudan. The Radio Producer will ensure that the content produced is objective, accurate, and relevant to the political, social, and economic landscape of the country. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including government bodies, civil society organizations, and other UN agencies, to convey the mission's narrative effectively. The Radio Producer will also oversee editorial policies, manage production processes, and integrate digital platforms into radio programming to enhance outreach and engagement with audiences. This position demands a proactive approach to identifying themes for broadcasting and adapting to media trends to maximize the impact of the radio content.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Radio Producer will be responsible for leading a team of national staff in the creation of daily radio programs that provide comprehensive news coverage on the UN's role in South Sudan. Key responsibilities include:
  • Designing and producing radio content that addresses critical issues such as civilian protection, human rights, and humanitarian assistance.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with government bodies, civil society organizations, and local media to enhance collaboration and content relevance.
  • Overseeing the editorial policies and production of all radio content, ensuring high standards of integrity and objectivity.
  • Developing and implementing a strategic distribution plan for radio and digital multimedia products.
  • Supporting the integration of digital platforms into radio production and fostering partnerships within the media sector.
  • Coordinating operational activities in alignment with the overall radio strategy and ensuring coverage of significant events.
  • Assisting in multimedia production, including scripting, recording, and editing.
  • Providing raw audio material for various stakeholders and preparing periodic status reports on the radio strategy implementation.
  • Interpreting and implementing UNMISS' mandate in radio production while exercising sound editorial judgment. 1
  • Performing additional tasks related to the operations of Radio Miraya as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Radio Producer position must possess a strong background in radio production and journalism. Required qualifications include:
  • Proven experience in producing radio content, including news, features, and public service announcements.
  • Strong understanding of the media landscape in South Sudan and the ability to engage with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with digital media platforms and their integration into traditional radio production.
  • Strong editorial judgment and the ability to maintain high standards of integrity and objectivity in content creation.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, media studies, or a related field is required for the Radio Producer position. Advanced degrees or specialized training in media production or public information are advantageous and may enhance a candidate's qualifications.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of professional experience in radio production, journalism, or a related field. Experience working in challenging environments, particularly in conflict or post-conflict settings, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within UNMISS. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan, such as Arabic or various indigenous languages, is considered a valuable asset and may enhance communication with local communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as a non-family duty station, and candidates should be prepared for austere living conditions with shared accommodations. The role is full-time, and the successful candidate will be expected to work in a challenging environment that may include power shortages and limited access to basic services. The contract duration is aligned with the UNMISS mandate, which is currently extended until 15 March 202
