Job Overview:
The Communications and Public Information Officer position is critical in raising awareness of the work of the United Nations in Panama. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and implementing communications activities that align with UN International Days, key reports, and other UN global and country priorities. This includes developing draft communications strategies and workplans, creating public information content for various platforms such as web, social media, and media outlets. The role also involves engaging with local audiences on UN priorities, coordinating public information activities, and monitoring and reporting on progress. The officer will collaborate with the RCO Data and Monitoring Officer to support the drafting of the UNSDCF annual report and develop a comprehensive outreach and communication strategy for the report. Additionally, the officer will be expected to produce a significant amount of digital content each month, ensuring that all communications are timely, accurate, and engaging, in line with UN branding and messaging guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Communications and Public Information Officer include:
  • Developing an agreed workplan that aligns with global and country strategic communications goals, including campaigns and activities to engage local audiences.
  • Supporting the drafting of the UNSDCF annual report in collaboration with the RCO Data and Monitoring Officer.
  • Creating at least 20 digital content assets per month, including infographics, visuals for promoting UN events, and graphic and audiovisual materials for digital platforms.
  • Covering at least 8 high-level events and meetings per month, producing news articles and products for web and social media, as well as for mass media outlets.
  • Maintaining UN communications channels, ensuring timely and engaging content that adheres to UN branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Providing communication support to the RC/RCO, including drafting the new UNSDCF communications strategy and coordinating the work of the UN Communications Group.
  • Performing other related communications tasks as needed to support the UN's mission in Panama.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include:
  • Proven experience in developing digital content, including creating and editing multimedia materials for social media using tools like Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, CapCut, or similar platforms.
  • Experience in graphic design, specifically in creating content such as infographics, visuals, and promotional materials tailored for both print and digital platforms.
  • Proficient use of graphic design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Canva, or others, particularly in creating multimedia content for marketing" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">digital marketing and social media campaigns.
  • Experience in capturing and editing high-quality photographs during high-level events and meetings, ensuring that visuals align with communication goals and are suitable for digital and print media.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, is required.
  • Previous experience with United Nations agencies, programs, and funds is desirable.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in communication, including experience in writing for the web and social media and/or mass media is required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position typically includes a degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in communications or public information will be preferred, as this role demands a strong understanding of communication strategies and practices within the context of international organizations.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of relevant experience in communication, particularly in roles that involve writing for the web, social media, and mass media. Experience working with international organizations, particularly the United Nations, is highly desirable. The role requires a demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective communication strategies and to produce high-quality content across various platforms.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position are English and Spanish, as they are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must possess excellent skills in Spanish writing and speaking, along with fluency in English. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but is not required.

This position is expected to last for a duration of 6 months. The role is full-time and involves working closely with various stakeholders within the United Nations system.
